Yoga is the physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India with a view to attain a state of permanent peace. The term yoga can be derived from either of two roots, yujir yoga (to yoke) or yuj samādhau (to concentrate). The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali defines yoga as "the stilling of the changing states of the mind". Yoga has also been popularly defined as "union with the divine" in other contexts and traditions.

As a Kids’ Yoga Director for Holy Yoga and a Master Holy Yoga teacher, Rachel has been teaching yoga for the past three years. She is passionate about connecting children to their hearts, minds and bodies through yoga and breath affirmations. Danielle Cather, certified kid yoga teacher, illustrator, and a co-creator brought this journey to life through whimsical illustrations and vibrant colors. Anne Tracy Emerson is an Emmy award-winning television producer and writer who wove this creative flow together for us as the editor and a co-creator. *Yoga gifts to enhance and educate your practice:
Asana is a body position, typically associated with the practice of Yoga, originally identified as a mastery of sitting still, with the spine as a conduit of biodynamic union. In the context of Yoga practice, asana refers to two things: the place where a practitioner (or yogin, in general usage), yogi (male), or yogini (female) sits and the manner (posture) in which he/she sits. In the Yoga sutras, Patanjali suggests that asana is "to be seated in a position that is firm, but relaxed" for extended, or timeless periods.
As a repertoire of postures were promoted to exercise the body-mind over the centuries, to the present day when yoga is sought as a primarily physical exercise form, modern usage has come to include variations from lying on the back and standing on the head, to a variety of other positions. However, in the Yoga sutras, Patanjali mentions the execution of sitting with a steadfast mind for extended periods as the third of the eight limbs of Classical or Raja yoga
, but does not reference standing postures or kriyas. Yoga practitioners (even those who are adepts at various complex postures) who seek the "simple" practice of chair-less sitting generally find it impossible or surprisingly grueling to sit still for the traditional minimum of one-hour (as still practiced in eastern Vipassana), some of them then dedicating their practice to sitting asana and the sensations and mind-states that arise and evaporate in extended sits.

Yoga is more than a simple process. And can include positions (asanas), energy and breath control (pranayama), and meditation, music, philosophy, and other approaches. While many people equate Hatha word with a particular style of yoga, the word actually refers to the physical aspect of yoga - the practices by pranayama and asana.
This is reflected also practice yoga to reduce the physical effects of stress on the body. Body responds to stress through the fight or flight response, which is a combination of the sympathetic nervous system and hormonal pathways activation, and the release of cortisol - the stress hormone - from the adrenal glands.
Yoga can ease pain. Studies have shown that practicing yoga asanas (postures), meditation or a combination of the two, reduced pain for people with conditions such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, auto-immune diseases and hypertension as well as arthritis, back and neck pain and other chronic conditions.
Yoga includes breathing practices known as pranayama, which can be effective for reducing our stress response, improving lung function and encouraging relaxation. Many pranayamas emphasize slowing down and deepening the breath, which activates the body’s parasympathetic system, or relaxation response. By changing our pattern of breathing, we can significantly affect our body’s experience of and response to stress. This may be one of the most profound lessons we can learn from our yoga practice.
Yoga can improve flexibility and mobility and increase range of motion. Over time, the ligaments, tendons and muscles lengthen, increasing elasticity.
Yoga connects us with the present moment. The more we practice, the more aware we become of our surroundings and the world around us. It opens the way to improved concentration, coordination, reaction time and memory.
The meditative effects of a consistent yoga practice help many cultivate inner peace and calm.
