This fiercely independent little country on Europe's fringes is so packed with history and charm that exploring it is well worth a few weeks of anyone's time.
Many visitors will already be familiar with many of the classic Scottish set pieces before they arrive: tranquil lochs, heathery glens, hilltop castles and brooding mountains, idyllic beaches, pretty villages and homey pubs with good local whiskies are all fairly easy to find. But of course there's far more besides, particularly in Scotland's two great and very happening cities: Edinburgh and Glasgow.
By using 1184 photos and 24,000 words in 155 entries SCOTLAND'S BEST will help you zero in on the sorts of things you will enjoy most on your trip to Scotland. It does this by listing all the key attractions in several NICHE CATEGORIES and by weaving many of these together into a few ITINERARIES for those simply wanting bit of everything. The itineraries also include suggestions of where you might get a good bite to eat along the way.

"Maryhill possesses in itself and its environs such strong attractions of scenery as draw many visitors from Glasgow, and exhibits for the most part a well-built, pleasant appearance"
- Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland, 1884
Why not take yourself on a free guided tour to the historic heart of Maryhill - part of Glasgow often overlooked on the standard tourist trails - as well as the peaceful, sunken green corridor of the River Kelvin valley, some stunning views from the raised portions of the Forth & Clyde Canal, and highlights the surprising number of historic buildings, interesting architecture, and important social and industrial heritage in the area.
Using your device's GPS signal, you can see how exactly where you are now used to look.
You can also be sure you're following the heritage trail route without worrying about getting lost !
If you're in Maryhill itself:
❖ follow a heritage trail on the ground & see what points of interest are along the way
❖ spot yourself on a 1942 RAF aerial photo - watch out for the Barrage Balloons!
❖ see yourself walking through time on a 110 year old map of Glasgow
If you're not in Maryhill:
❖ browse points of interested from the comfort of your own home
❖ find out more about the stunning stained glass and where it came from
❖ explore how the area has changed by comparing current satellite imagery with archive photos and maps
The app contains one walking trail, 28 points of interest, 20 stained glass panels, an archive map and a wartime aerial photo. You’ll see historic buildings (including the restored Burgh Halls and Maryhill Leisure Centre), ancient monuments (such as the canal locks and aqueduct), and one of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s least well known buildings. You’ll follow the route of old railways lines, discover the location of many of the famous Maryhill stained glass panels, and maybe even see the odd heron or swan along the way.
More content and updates will be added over time - please send us your memories of the area and suggestions for interesting places to feature using the feedback button in the App!

From the Clyde shipyards, to wading birds on the estuary; or the grouse moors of the highlands to the gaelic poetry inspired by the landscape, the stories describe the links between man and Scotland’s rich natural environment.
The stories are narrated by well-known broadcasters Fiona MacDonald and Mark Stephen and include poetry and sound effects as well as sounds of the natural world.
The app includes
• stunning images from noted photographers showing Scotland’s diverse wildlife, landscapes and places of historical interest.
• interviews and snippets from experts and enthusiasts. Listeners can hear from bird experts, a distiller, a countryside ranger and a broadcaster, among others, as they share their knowledge and passion about the natural world and natural resources of Scotland.
