About this app

What is THE GATE?

THE GATE examines Hamburg's identity on the basis of the well-known image slogan “Gate to the World”. The exhibition in the urban space shows HafenCity as a constantly changing organism in which buildings and people mutually influence each other and connects this locally located audio library with an art course that takes in another 16 stations in HafenCity.
The five chapters Control, Limbo, Paradise, Potency and Overseas give you orientation and help you delve deeper into the subject.

Why does the exhibition have two parts?

The two exhibition areas complement each other. Ten entertaining series of podcasts await you in this app, using the gate metaphor to give you a clear understanding of the district. The works of art, on the other hand, track down invisible, unconscious or unwanted dimensions of urban space that receive little attention in everyday urban life.

How do I use the app?

Browse through the audio library at home or on the go, but the best thing to do is to hear the more than 70 contributions on site in HafenCity. You can put together your route individually from a program of around 750 minutes, depending on your interests and personal preferences. Either let yourself be inspired by our recommendations and practical tips, or you can sort the programs yourself according to topic, format, location and follow your personal tour on the map view.
There you will also find some audio files that can only be played on site, the only visual format “The invisible HafenCity” and the GPS markings of the guest post from Miniatur Wunderland. The model builders of Germany's most popular tourist attraction have distributed five special dioramas around the city.

What podcasts are there?

In a series of conversations with the historian Sandra Schürmann, the History Podcast Stadt im Fluss offers an opportunity to deal with the meaningful dimension of the built environment, as does Daniel Tyradelli's ‘philosophical miniatures on the threshold of wisdom. The fictional HafenCity correspondent spoken by actress Julia Kemp reports on the future of the district in her program After Our Time, while different voices in the city draw attention to personal aspects of the urban environment in three selected areas of HafenCity. In Die Mundhalle speaks and visions of a co-produced city young creative professionals have their say. A small district atlas is based on unusual map views that bring the invisible HafenCity onto the screen, and the mini-gates add real dioramas from our partner Miniatur Wunderland to the urban space. The reading series Tore zur Welt brings together journalistic, literary and poetic texts, essays and diary excerpts from the past hundred years. Last but not least, the art guide provides background information on the participating artists and their works.

Who is behind it?

The audio library THE GATE, curated by Ellen Blumenstein with Theresa Michel, is the first sub-project in the “Open Worlds” group that will develop a flexible mobile application based on open source from 2020-2023. Accompanied by a digital partner, the Berlin joint venture for interkit.app (Jennifer Aksu, Holger Heißmeyer, Sebastian Quack), IMAGINE THE CITY is dedicated to the development of several, Freely combinable components that will be used in parallel in an ambitious final project in 2023 for the first time in all four institutions. The results of the joint process should then be made available to other cultural actors free of charge and collectively further developed. “Open Worlds” is funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation as part of the Digital Fund. www.offene-welten.de
