The new Smart Food BaWü app is a core component of the Smart Food BaWü research project (https://smartfoodbawue.de), which is funded by the Ministry of Food, Rural Areas and Consumer Protection Baden-Württemberg (MLR) (https://mlr.baden -wuerttemberg.de).
It was specifically developed to record food waste in private households. The app can be linked to a scale via Bluetooth. Food waste can be measured very precisely. For the first time, this creates the opportunity specifically for private households to efficiently and precisely optimize food management and make it sustainable.
Individual prices can be stored in the app for the food thrown away. The app generates results reports showing the amount of waste per food category as well as the associated costs and also shows the associated climate-relevant emissions based on scientifically researched data on climate relevance. In the “Quick Check” each household can compare its own results with the average values of comparable households. The possible savings potential is also shown. Information and tips on handling food are also given in order to avoid food waste in everyday life. The support function guarantees prompt support should any questions or problems arise among users. The app and all included functions are free - but registration is required. Users are regularly informed about current information and events.
