As a pure touring theater, Wodo Puppenspiel was founded in 1983 by Dorothee Wellfonder and Wolfgang Kaup-Wellfonder. The first two letters of the first names form "Wodo". The first great success in 1986 was the production of “Pippi Longstocking”, a puppet show that is unique in the world. This classic children's book was discovered by Wodo Puppenspiel for the performing arts, puppet theater. Several such premieres have now been added.
In 1989, Wodo Puppenspiel opened a permanent venue “Ateliertheater” in addition to its touring business, moved to the town hall in Mülheim an der Ruhr in 1992, and then started giving regular performances from 2003 onwards in the WodoStudio of the Ruhr Ringlokschuppens.
Since 1988 the theater has been supported by the non-profit association of the friends of the Mülheim puppet theater Wodo Puppenspiel e.V. Wodo Puppenspiel, which has had the addition “Mülheimer Figurentheater” in its name since 1989, has also made guest appearances abroad: Finland, Poland, Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland.
The spectrum of topics includes, among other things, equality between women and men, equality between Germans and foreigners, children's rights, children's strengths, health care and the joy of reading. The plays should not only appeal to the children, but also to parents, grandparents and educators. Depending on the topic, different figures such as marionettes, hand puppets and table figures are used. Participating during the performances and talking to the audience is part of the concept of the theater.
