The app “Blaues WundAR” makes the blue pedestrian bridge formerly located on the Goerdelerring in Leipzig, the so-called “Blue Wonder”, virtually visible again. The bridge played a special role in the Monday demonstrations of the Peaceful Revolution in Leipzig, which is why the app was created for the city of Leipzig's Light Festival on October 9, 2024.
It is an art project by the Leipzig artist Maix Mayer on behalf of Leipzig Tourismus und Marketing GmbH for the 35th Leipzig Light Festival in 2024. As a Leipzig resident, Maix Mayer actively participated in the Monday demonstrations in 1989 on the Leipziger Ring and documented this on video. The most important point of view for the media documentation of the demonstrations was the pedestrian bridge, which was demolished in 2004 and called the “Blue Wonder” by the people of Leipzig. Using augmented reality (AR), the building can be experienced again in the urban space at the old location. His app “Blaues WundAR” virtually rebuilds the bridge and thus turns the “Blaue Wunder” into a WundAR. When the cell phone camera is switched on, the live mode is overlaid with a 3D animation of the bridge.
