About this app

MyShake is a comprehensive and free earthquake app offering these features:

Earthquake Early Warning
Receive timely, potentially life-saving early warning alerts in California, Oregon and Washington. MyShake uses the USGS ShakeAlert system to deliver alerts for earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 (or greater) several seconds before shaking arrives.

Earthquake Safety
View safety tips for earthquake preparedness such as securing hazardous or moveable items and creating a disaster plan. Know what to do during an earthquake and learn more about Drop, Cover and Hold On!

Earthquake Map
View and explore a map of earthquakes around the world and get detailed information such as earthquake magnitude, location and depth. Share your own experience of an earthquake and see community reports of shaking and damage.

Earthquake Notification
Stay informed of earthquakes as they occur by receiving notifications on your phone. Select your regions of interest and the earthquake magnitude. You’ll never miss out on any earthquake greater than magnitude 3.5!

Smartphone-Based Global Seismic Network
Participate in a smartphone-based global seismic network. In this research project, your phone becomes a mini-seismometer and contributes to the detection of earthquakes wherever you are. This global citizen-science based seismic network has the potential to provide early warning earthquake alerts in every region of the world, even in the absence of traditional seismic networks!

About Us
MyShake is developed by the University of California, Berkeley, Seismology Lab and funded by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. The Berkeley Seismology Lab conducts essential research on earthquakes and solid earth processes while collecting and delivering high quality geophysical data.

MyShake is available in English, Spanish (Español), Chinese Traditional (繁體中文), Filipino, Korean (한국인), and Vietnamese (Tiếng Việt).

MyShake is available to everyone for free with no ads and no subscriptions!

I dont think it is useful running in the background, and if running in the forefront, eats battery. I uninstalled the app for now, but I will come back in a month to see if users are finding it useful. I liked the previous colored circles, not current orange blobs. Keep up the work, though, it is truly a great idea, just needs refinement and more Beta testing.

Hi, we do recommend that it stays running in the background. You can dismiss the app, but we don't recommend killing it. This is an ongoing area of testing, so we want to err on the safe side so people continue to get alerts. For saving battery, we also recommend turning on battery saving mode.

Neat idea but not very functional due to the inability to control notification sounds. I use pagerduty for monitoring critical systems and one of the great things about pagerduty's app is it's ability to bypass DnD/vibrate/silent. Just because I don't want to know about email during quiet hours doesn't mean I don't care about an earthquake. Also not being able to pick a notification sound for each filter means the notifications for deadly earthquake sound the same as Postmates.

Hi, we are currently not able to override any phone system settings such as DND, etc but we are looking into changing this in the near future. Also, notifications and alerts (early warning alerts) are different. Check out this demo video to see what an alert sounds and looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1p0pFFbH8M&feature=youtu.be

Like it, but not enough to keep it. Love the idea of this app. However, even after adjusting the settings, I still get unwanted location alerts. (I have to Google long/lat anyway to know the affected alert areas) So what's the point? I'm sure it will improve with time. I'll keep checking back. For now I'll just give my phone a bit more space/battery life. The news alerts at this point, are a bit more convenient for me.
