Advertise yourself to nearby people and check who they are. This free app broadcasts your Facebook profile picture link to others via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). You can search for other people advertising their pictures and visit their Facebook profiles. The range may be even up to a hundred meters or more.
Example #1: When you go to the bus stop, all the people there using SelfAd may check your Facebook profile. In like manner, you may check who they are.
Example #2: When entering a cafe, the people inside may catch your Facebook profile picture with their SelfAd application. You can observe the people advertising themselves. Yet, it's possible to arrange the people by their proximity, so the app show the closest people first.
Example #3: Search who's around you. You don't need to advertise at all.
In order to advertise your picture, you need to log into Facebook through the Facebook login button of the app. Once this is done, you can start broadcasting a link to the picture wirelessly. This broadcast will continue even if this application is closed. The broadcast will terminate only if the advertising switch is turned off from the app or Bluetooth is turned off from the device settings.
These capabilities are based on Bluetooth Beacons. Eddystone URL beacon technology is utilized to enable broadcasting on a standardized manner. The Beacon is non-connectable meaning nobody can connect to your device. Instead, this is a one-way broadcast in which you only transmit information.
In like manner, the app may scan for other beacons providing links to FB pictures. Such picture thumbnails are seen as scan results. By touching such a picture, the system pops up a window asking whether to visit the profile. By accepting this, the app will direct you to the corresponding Facebook profile.
The physical range of the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) advertising varies a lot. There are a number of factors contributing to this, whether it's practiced indoors or outdoors and so on. However, at most a few hundred meters may be achieved but even greater distances are possible. The app provides a setting for limited transmission range.
If your Facebook profile is private, the app will not reveal your picture to others. Instead, a question mark will be seen by others. You may still scan for other people and they may visit your profile.
SelfAd stands for Self Advertise.
