Travel Hands is a charity that helps Visually Impaired People (VIP) travel safely, affordably, and independently. Our app connects VIPs with verified, sighted volunteers to walk together to their destinations for appointments, recreation, or events.
The Travel Hands App is designed with accessibility at its core, supporting screen readers and zoom functions. It follows WCAG 2.1 guidelines, with input from VIP users, ensuring ease of use for all.
How it works:
A journey request is made by a VIP or on their behalf.
The app pairs VIPs with nearby volunteers heading in the same direction.
Volunteers guide VIPs safely to their destination.
VIPs pay a small fee per journey, ensuring a cost-effective travel option. Volunteers are thoroughly vetted through Enhanced DBS checks and trained via online or in-person sessions. As they assist VIPs, volunteers enjoy a flexible way to stay active and contribute to the community.
Incentives for Volunteers:
Coming soon, volunteers will earn rewards as they accumulate points based on the distance walked with VIPs, redeemable for goodies via our partner companies.
Challenges Faced by VIPs:
Globally, 285 million people face difficulties traveling independently. In London, VIPs often spend twice as much on travel compared to sighted individuals. The pandemic has further complicated travel for those needing physical assistance. Transport for London reports that 84% of disabled travelers find their disability limits travel options.
