Jornaler@ is a tool to help prevent and report occurences of wage theft. Created as a collaboration between workers, organizers, artists, and lawyers, Jornaler@ app is a practical tool that allows workers to connect with a broad network of day laborers, protect themselves and prevent wage theft through personal data collection and labor rights education.Wage theft is the willful nonpayment of a worker’s earned wages. For certain people, wage theft is happens regularly. Within the app, you will see three key functions: Check In/Check Out; Alert; and Report.
Check-In/Check-Out: The core function of Jornaler@ is its streamlined personal data collection system designed by and for day laborers. Simply put, Check-In/Check-Out is a “punch card” that gives a worker the option to keep track of their hours, hourly wage, location, breaks, employer picture, work license, car model, and license plate number for each job. The app collects the data and keeps it in a central location at the individual’s local worker center, and simultaneously creates an in-app “Job Log” for the user that displays weekly and annual wages, as well as a monthly average wage for jobs in the area.
Report: In the event of wage theft, the worker immediately has the necessary documentation to begin a wage theft complaint in most state administrative proceedings. The Report section helps workers fill out any additional information that they might remember about their job or employer, and sends the documentation to their affiliate worker center. At a network worker center, the worker can get help filing their claim in the appropriate venue or contacting their employer to arrange for mediation.
Alert: Jornaler@ is a tool designed to combat the inherent isolation of day labor by using technology to create strong networks of workers wherever they are located. To that end, the Alert function allows a worker to anonymously warn other workers within a certain radius of non-paying jobs and bad employers so that others may prevent their work from being stolen.
