Teen Info Room is an app for knowing and for resting, made for teenagers who help look after family members or run the household. It does not tell anyone what to do. It simply offers facts, knowledge, and a note that certain places exist - laid out on a screen like a quiet room at night.
■ Data
National surveys in Japan report how many teenagers care for family members: about 1 in 17 second-year junior high school students and 1 in 24 second-year high school students - about one in every classroom. About half help almost every day, averaging 3 to 4 hours on weekdays. National surveys in the UK, Germany and Switzerland have counted young carers too. And it says honestly: in many countries, no one has counted yet.
■ Basics
What the words "young carer" mean. How support workers regard the effort involved. How to think about causes without looking for someone to blame. How helplines work. The basic idea that caring about family and caring about one's own time and future can go together. Everything is written as information - facts and what support workers say - never as instructions to the reader.
There is also a section for when a family member has a disability. It gives possible reasons behind things like finding certain sounds or touch hard to bear, or strong anxiety when plans change, with quotes and links to Japanese public sources. It also offers example sentences for telling friends or teachers about things at home (tap to copy), and ideas for places to study outside the home and for keeping important things safe.
■ Helplines
A quiet list of services for teenagers: worldwide directories such as Child Helpline International and Find a Helpline, and 24-hour lines in several countries. Numbers and hours were checked against each organization's official website. Whether to use them is each person's own choice. The app does not push.
■ Breathe
A screen with a warm light that slowly grows and shrinks, for breathing along. Calm music (which can be turned off) and a short line of text. That is all this room is. Time spent doing nothing has meaning too.
■ Designed for peace of mind
Completely free, no ads, no account. Your notes never leave your device. A browser opens only when you tap a helpline link.
■ Languages
12 languages: Japanese, English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, Korean, Chinese, and Arabic. Switch anytime with the button at the top of the screen.
■ About this app
One of the free welfare apps developed by SOYOGI, a care and support consultation service in Japan, made in the hope of quietly reaching people who tend to fall through the cracks of support.
Facts, helplines, and a quiet place to breathe for teens caring for family.
