About this app

Nokaneng provides you with a secure and private platform to access information about gender based violence, receive or give advice, and maximize your protection against violence.

With Nokaneng, you can watch, read or listen to information about the different forms of gender based violence, services available in Lesotho and the laws that protect you against violence. You can ask professional counsellors for advice and give your own advice to others. Moreover, you can alert trusted contact or your immediate surrounding when at risk of violence.

Nokaneng gives you the knowledge and tools to enhance your safety, prevent violence before it happens and access support when you need it.

Nokaneng is zero-rated in Lesotho, meaning you will not be charged any data when using the App (downloading requires data). You can use Nokaneng in both Sesotho and English.

The main features of Nokaneng are:

My situation:
Here, you can watch or read the (fictional) story of the abusive relationship between Khobotle and Lireko and how friends and family try to assist. Through the story different forms of violence are explained. [You can also read or listen to articles related to gender based violence.

My services:
In this section, different experts explain what services they provide to survivors of and people affected by gender based violence. The section also includes contact details for the police and health facilities, and shows you which of these services are closest to your current location.

My rights:
This section provides information on the laws available in Lesotho that protect against gender based violence. Organized by type of violence, experts explain which laws apply and what rights you have.

My advice:
This feature functions as an online support group. If you need advice, you can ask a question to a professional counsellor. This is completely anonymous (they will not know your name or phone number). They will answer your question within 24 hours and post it on the App – where you and other users can read it. You can also give advice (anonymously) to questions posted by others.

Emergency Message:
You can choose up to 6 trusted contacts from your phone to be part of your Safe Circle. If you feel like you are at risk of violence, you can send a pre-programmed SMS Emergency Message to your Safe Circle to alert them. It’s free. It’s quick. It’s discreet. Two taps is all it takes.

Instant Rescue:
You can set off a false alarm by pressing the Alarm Button or by shaking the phone (when the App is open), to alert your surroundings in a sticky situation.

Nokaneng is an initiative by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the Lesotho Ministry of Gender, Youth, Sports and Recreation, GenderLinks Lesotho, Vodacom Lesotho and the Vodacom Lesotho Foundation. The App forms part of the Partnerships for Prevention of Violence Against Women and Girls in Southern Africa Programme, implemented by GIZ.
