Most apps hand you a list of words and wish you luck. Vocabbie talks to you, one line at a time, and the lesson happens in the conversation.

A LESSON IS A CONVERSATION
Open the app and it talks to you, one line at a time, and your first lesson starts in that same chat. Each lesson is a few lines, then a question. Answer it, and the reaction under your answer says what the words meant and whether it worked. Miss one and you see the right one. Tap the speaker on any word to hear it. Short enough for one bus ride.

SEVEN COURSES WRITTEN AHEAD
Finnish, Spanish, Croatian, German, French, Italian and Swedish have courses written before you arrive: the same lessons for everyone, in an order that builds, checked before anyone sees them. Finnish has 96 lessons, Spanish 64 and Croatian 64, each running from beginner to upper intermediate. German, French, Italian and Swedish have 20 each, for beginners. A map shows where you are in each course and what comes next, and every lesson keeps a cheat sheet.

Finnish is where we went furthest, because it needed it: fifteen noun cases and few words you can guess. Ninety-six lessons written by hand, on the parts that actually stop people: why the word changed shape, what the partitive is for. Still in beta, and still growing.

NEW WORDS ON CARDS FIRST
Before a lesson asks you about a word, you meet it on a card: guess the meaning, build the word from its pieces, check. Your cards keep every word you met, and the ones you fumble come back sooner.

SPEAK BEFORE YOU HAVE TO
Talk to the app in the language you are learning and it answers in that language. It tells you whether what you said was right, and shows the translation when you want it. If you freeze, ask for a line and say that one instead. It checks the sentence, not your accent. Better to get it wrong here than at the counter in a shop.

EVERY LINE CAN BE HEARD
Every word and every sentence can be read aloud, so you know how it sounds before you try it out on somebody.

83 MORE LANGUAGES, SAME CHAT
Pick any of 90. Where there is no written course yet, your lessons are written for you as you go, in the same chat. A second language does not mean a second app, and its first lesson is free even on a day you have already had yours.

WHAT IS FREE
Two lessons a day, three speaking turns and three card decks, for as long as you like. Lite raises those limits. Pro removes the daily caps on lessons and speaking and gives you 100 decks. Pro starts with a 7-day free trial.
