Independent (“indie”) music and indie culture has been a big part of the Hong Kong history and values. With thousands of songs written by hundreds of musicians / songwriters every year, a lot of these Hong Kong music talents are still hidden from the general public. This is because apart from what is being marketed, the public generally has limited access to any alternative in choosing what music they listen to.
“Indie music” includes not only artists/bands that are not signed by record label, but also those that are rarely covered by mainstream media. As a result, due to limited budget for music production, marketing and promotion, and the lack of efficient platforms and channels to showcase their music to the wider audience, a lot of indie artists / bands are forced to remain “underground”. These music talents are all around us; they could be your colleagues, classmates, neighbours or even family members. It is HITA’s mission to bring these talents and quality music to the face of the Hong Kong general public.
It took over a year for the founding of HITA from a mere idea to our official launch in this September 2014. Through showcasing our diverse indie archives on our smartphone app, website, social media platform, as well as a series of live house events, HITA wants to make exploring quality indie music a fun and convenient experience.
