Key features:
Supports bounded and unbounded universes, with cells of up to 256 states.
Supports multiple algorithms, including Bill Gosper's super fast hashlife algorithm.
Many different types of CA are included: John von Neumann's 29-state CA, Wolfram's 1D rules, WireWorld, Generations, Langton's Loops, Paterson's Worms, etc.
Reads RLE, macrocell, Life 1.05/1.06, dblife, and MCell files.
Can extract patterns and rules from zip files.

The End-All App for Conway's GoL and Myriad 1 & 2D CA A near-perfect 1-to-1 mobile implementation of one of the best programs for exploring cellular automata out there. I can see how the UI could be daunting to newcomers, but as someone who used the original desktop version, I can say I'm past satisfied. Saving patterns locally and loading more from the wiki or any site that distributes .rle file patterns, all the features I could ask for are present. This is not a "lite" edition, so for those less experienced with the GoL, hold off, but Golly users, get it!

When I was younger at around 10 years old, I got bored and stumbled upon cellular automata, among other free programs such as robot programming games. I thought they looked cool and didn't think much of them. Flash forward to now where these kinds of programs are still around, I was surprised to see mobile ports. This particular cellular automata program wasn't the one I used when I was young, but it definitely is very advanced. There are a wealth of features to customize the simulations, and there are many bundled example files as well. In addition the Golly website has the original versions for computers and is open source, which makes Golly a great choice for a many versions to choose from and a quality FOSS project.

It is awesome and has amazing performance but I would like to see a better inplementation of the fullscreen mode: Make it actually fullscreen (not just hide a bar) Add a litte fast-menu (eg. on the press of the back button a box shows up with options to change the speed, move/draw and stop/start options with one click)
Rastabula Rasta
One of the best and most powerful cellular automaton simulator. If only they would extend it to neighbourhood of radius 2!

Great work. Would love to see an update with more desktop features coming in such as exporting to image & choosing the color of the cells. Different icon shapes could also be a great addition.

A great program, but I'd like to see a stochastic update feature as well.

After testing alt-wicks.py a plethora of times, it seems to always crash
Where is 1D support? Lots of 2D CA, but where is the supposed 1D support. I can't find the elementary CA Wolfram rules.

Tap the Rule button and type in a rule like W22. Or tap OPEN and load HashLife - wolfram22.mc. Only even-numbered Wn rules are allowed. More details at the bottom of HELP - Algorithms - QuickLife. Superb Implementation Everything is there in your hand. Should liven up some maths week lessons.

There are dozens (hundreds?) of Life apps with a "modern" UI aimed at people with short attention spans. I didn't see much point writing yet another such app. Golly's UI is designed to look reasonably similar to the desktop version. I'd love to hear your ideas on how to support all the features Golly provides without having lots of buttons. Genial! The best cellular automata that I found! I love testing with different samples :)
After having played around with the app some more, I retract my previous statement. The ui for loading things is a bit fiddly and had me looking at the rest of the app in a bad light. This is a fantastic app and I really ought to be less grumpy.

Thanks for reconsidering. People familiar with the desktop version of Golly will certainly find the Android/iOS versions a lot more fiddly to use. A decent port with a few minor issues The only major gripe is the pattern selection menu. The nested list just doesn't work well on touch, no matter how careful I am I always seem to tap above or below the item I intended. Making the text bigger might fix that.
The best life app I love this app both in Android and Windows implementations. It is very flexible, allows to modify rules and patterns as much as I want and more (I am still learning about different varieties of the game). The only thing missing (in all such programs) is an ability to add rules about random generation of live dots (with certain probability, within dense areas, etc.). This is to my opinion extremely important because if played long enough, the approach could result in appearance of a perfect replicator.
Amazing It's a joy to paint a swirl of cells on the board with one's finger and watch as they evolve. I would like to see an "Automatic Fit" feature, equivalent to pressing the Fit button at each generation.
Works great on a Nexus 4 Simple intuitive interface. As amazingly fast as the desktop version. Nice work Andrew!
Dream come true Hashlife in your pocket - never get bored!
Its Cool! Really cool, and SUPER fast. Best life game software out there.
Better than the others. And probably the best it can get on the phone regarding the gui
Fast, stable Golly, as always, is the best there is when it comes to CA.
Exceptional Extremely well done implementation of the game of life!
Great It has all of the things that i would want in a cellular automata simulator

Try the "Rule" button (bottom of main screen). Great This is the fastest, feature-rich CA program I have ever used.
Does what it says it does Flawlessly, not a nice ui though.
Amazing Fast and responsive just like the desktop version. Thanks a lot!
Best life app by far Wonderful to see this ported to Android
Great and all but it keeps crashing if I make a rule file with the rule editor thing. And then I havze to reinstall, but I lose all my RLEs :(
