A simple task list manager that strives to have just enough features to do GTD, but no more. Based on the todo.txt app so a todo.txt file (http://todotxt.com) is used for syncing the task list to the cloud.
Can also be used for MYN/1MTD. See the screenshots for an example of how to use it for MYN.
Features
- True to GTD without unnecessary bells and whistles
- Todo list stored on Dropbox in the todo.txt format
- Comprehensive filtering and multi sort
- Quickly filter tasks using the left navigation drawer
- Save common filters in right navigation drawer
- Create calendar reminders for specific tasks directly from the app
- Share the complete tasklist or selected tasks using the Android share feature
- Tasks can deferred into the future. Combined with the "Show future tasks" filter it allows you to get tasks out of your face (as in 1MTD/MYN)

Great but minor problem If I add more than one context, the task only shows up in one context group.
Great todo.txt app! Used this for almost a year now. My go to mobile version of todo.txt (just use Sublime editor on desktop). Recurring syntax & Lua script implementation are perfect. Recent update altered alpha sort to letters only (numbers at start of line no longer sort numerically or above letters), which is disappointing and seems an odd regression. For plain text organizers, this & SimpleTask Cloudless are the the best out there.

Love it! Only one issue Could the widget be allowed to be made larger that 2x2? Would make it a lot more usable. Can barely read anything in such a small space!

Love this application.

This app shows great promise, but unfortunately I can't use it because it requires syncing with a Dropbox account. I use ownCloud. Are there any plans for providing users the opportunity of syncing with other cloud storage solutions?

Amazing app, responsive developer Once you get used to it, the only to do app you'll ever need. You can customize the sort orders to make it adapt to almost any productivity system.

Because of way the main view works, tasks can only be displayed once in the list. See https://github.com/mpcjanssen/simpletask-android/issues/153 Great todo.txt app! Used this for almost a year now. Could you log an issue for the alphasort on Github? Love it! Only one issue Could the widget be allowed to be made larger that 2x2? Would make it a lot more usable. Can barely read anything in such a small space!

I can resize widgets larger than 2x2. But this is probably very launcher dependent. I will check if there is a setting to forces 2x2 max in the code somewhere. This app shows great promise, but unfortunately I can't use it because it requires syncing with a Dropbox account. I use ownCloud. Are there any plans for providing users the opportunity of syncing with other cloud storage solutions?

For Owncloud use FolderSync to sync the todo file and then use the Simpletask Cloudless version to open it. It will reload the file if it changes in the background and is explictely intended for non Dropbox storage. Amazing app, responsive developer Once you get used to it, the only to do app you'll ever need. You can customize the sort orders to make it adapt to almost any productivity system.
Love it. Easy to use, functional, intuitive, fast, built upon a great idea. All in all it's a great app. Thanks for making it and giving it away for free! Note to creator: is it possible to have the app link to a todo.txt file in Google Drive? Drive is my main cloud repository and it would be great to store my todo.txt there instead of Dropbox when I want to edit it on my computer. edit: thank you Mark Janssen for a reply. Much appreciated. Totally understand the issue with APIs. Thanks for the suggestion of Foldersync. I'll check that out. Thanks again for all the excellent work on the app.
Mark Janssen June 29, 2016
Maintaining cloud APIs is a lot of work so I will not add anything more than Dropbox. However you can use something like Foldersync to sync your todo from drive to the local storage and then use Simpletask Cloudless with that (that was one of the goals of the Cloudless version) The best todo.txt app on Android The simplicity, flexibility and powerful features of this app make it ideal for all your task management needs. Great stuff.
Boosted my productivity Easier than the paper list I would walk around with all day. Just the right amount of features.
Perfect! No distractions, just plain todo.txt. Works great, even with multiple users using the same file in Dropbox.
Simple, good, thorough Great app. I feel you must be able to order tasks in the file, and control where in that order you want to insert new tasks. Missing that capability. Otherwise, not bad at all, I would say best todo.txt app for android! BR! /marcus
Mark Janssen April 15, 2016
What do you mean by controlling where to insert a new task? The line number in the todo file? EDIT: Manual ordering tasks in the file is really hard to make work well with all the sorting options. I am very open for suggestions though. Back doesn't save edits. (Fixed in 7.2.1) When I edit an item there is no way to save the changes. Edit: You're AWESOME Dude!

Stupid bug in 7.2.0. Will upload fixed 7.2.1 ASAP. After yesterday's update, my tasks aren't exhibiting. I can see the txt files in my Dropbox account. Other todo.txt apps can open files normally, but Simpletask. What happened?
Mark Janssen April 13, 2016
Stupid bug in 7.2.0. Will upload fix ASAP. EDIT: This is probably another issue. Please log an issue at github. https://github.com/mpcjanssen/simpletask-android/issues Fantastic Recently switched from using Remember the Milk. Todo.txt & simpletask made the transition seemless.
Mark Janssen March 1, 2016
A big part of the value of todo.txt and Simpletask is that the service will never go away and never change the pricing. It's all based on a simple flat text file. Fantastic Better than the official todo. txt app. Todo. txt cli is hands down the best todo list manager and this app is the perfect mobile complement to that program.
I guess I misunderstood the philosophy of the app, sorry about that! Still, I like to prioritize by order in my todo.txt, so I though I would be able to do that in the app as well. Thanks for offering it for free!
Mark Janssen February 9, 2016
You can't move tasks up and down. The point is to stay close to the text based todo.txt format with UI options to make frequent tasks easier. I agree this is not for everybody.
EDIT: No problem. Prioritizing by by order is a very common strategy. I do something similar with start dates. Thanks for the update. Mark Janssen February 16, 2016
This is a bug in the AddTask code. Will be fixed in next version. The calendar integration is still a little clunky, but this app does what I want and far more. It makes GTD simply no fuss at all. I'm looking forward to using it for years to come.
Mark Janssen February 7, 2016
If you have any improvement ideas, please raise a feature request (url accessible from the help menu). What is cluncky about the calendar integration? perfect I love the simplicity and functionallity of this app. What I like most is advanced filtering. Even for batch operations this app is more convenient than a pc with an feature rich editor.
Mark Janssen February 3, 2016
I have made the app more robust by storing the tasks in database instead of in memeory. This may have impacted performance. Could you contact me by mail @ mpc.janssen@gmail.com so I can look into this? My performace is still OK Simple is better - get more done So much simpler to use a simple tasking style such as this. Loving it!
Best Task App I've Used Great features and flexible to use how you want. Would be nice if there was a way to disable the sync without logging out of Dropbox of turning off the internet.
Mark Janssen January 24, 2016
More control over the dropbox syncing is on the todo list. In the mean time you could use Cloudless with something like Foldersync for more control. Mark Janssen December 30, 2015
You can't (for now). Change font sizes and other UI elements is on the list, but I don't have time for it at the moment. This app is amazing! I have been through just about every GTD and to do program around, with simple todo.txt this gives all the features of expensive, cumbersome systems, and works beautifully and much faster! Amazing!
Todo.txt to the next level Gina Trapani created a great todo system, but has abandoned Android support for her app. Fair enough. Her prerogative. This app adds up to date UI and more features. Plus, the ability to not use a cloud service. Love it. Donated...
At last.... The headlines of this app should read: "Simpletask continues where Gina Trapani left off'. This should attract the attention of those already using 'todo.txt' as this follows the same formatting & rules. In fact, Simpletask was able to sync up the actual todo.txt within the todo directory from Dropbox (/todo/todo.txt) by default. It definitely fills up the missing gaps that I hoped the original todo.txt was missing such as (based on my needs and experience Pro's include): -Use todo.txt terms (due to the fact that Simpletask uses +tag @list) -Capitalize new tasks -Calander reminders (create automatically from due dates) Unfortunately where this app struggles (especially from a glance - Con's include): -Keeping in mind that Simpletask re-words the terms used to label context/projects as list/tag....and for @lists, they're located above each task that has one and it's hard on the eyes. IMHO it should really be located at the right-hand size of each list since the spacing between each other is huge. -spacing between each task is huge which makes it difficult to peripherally read your tasks. -Too many fiddling options -Sorting should be monolithic to standard todo.txt
Has only features that are absolutely required. Thus causes little to no overhead in your time management procedures. There are apps with better UX, with more features. But there is no one that would be so simple, helpful and, moreover, free. Update: switched back to Simpletask from "feature-rich" paid application. Simply love it.
fantastic... update: the conflict problem indeed has been fixed. it's all good now. could you maybe add a slightly cheaper donate version of your app?
Mark Janssen September 4, 2015
Can you contact me by mail? I thought this issue was fixed.
EDIT: You can donate whatever you feel is appropriate by paypal. But no donation is fine too. When Dropbox is for a moment unreachable. What I mean are the pop-up notifications. I guess I need to say that other than this one thing (which I personally find a constant annoyance, but others may not) this is a fantastic app. Really.
Mark Janssen September 2, 2015
EDIT: I could add a "Don't toast" setting
You mean popup toasts? I could reduce the number of messages but then people might miss the fact that the changes are not synced. Maybe I can change the color of the toolbar to indicate pending changes instead. Or don't show a toast if there are already pending changes and you make additional changes. Great evolution of todo.txt. 1 question When entering multiple items carriage return inserts leading space. How do you stop this?
Mark Janssen August 27, 2015
Odd, this should not be happening. It doesn't for me. Do you have prefill next on? It does exactly what it says it does, and without complication. This is perfect. It's not trying to sell you an ecosystem!
Need to support taskpaper. Please add support for taskpaper style. Like indent tab, dash, etc. I tried tested between simpletask and taskpaper but still really messed up like to lose dash and indent tab and add @done instead of 'x'.
Mark Janssen October 22, 2015
The todo, txt format is embedded quite deeply in the application. I can look to change it in such a way that taskpaper doesn't break, but it will never properly support Taskpaper. Does what it says on the tin, and does it very well Great app, simple and functional
Mark Janssen April 7, 2014
Yes recurring tasks are supported using the rec: extension. See http://mpcjanssen.nl/doc/simpletask/. Recurring now is relative to either the create date of the task or the completion date. There is a feature request to support both at the same time. Excellent app! This is by far the best todo.txt app yet. Developer is extremely responsive. I reported a bug in an earlier version and he had a fix the next day. He's very open to feedback and awesome to work with.
Wish I could restrict dropbox access to app dir instead of all dropbox. Almost didn't use bc of full access. Also wish I could manually reorder tasks. So far pretty happy. Looking forward to dropbox app dir only permissions. I know you are working for free here. Really great work!
Mark Janssen August 14, 2015
EDIT: App dir access will be available in the next version. Review deleted
