About this app

NZ COVID Tracer is the Ministry of Health’s official contact tracing mobile app. It helps you protect your friends, whānau and community by enabling faster contact tracing.

Help contact tracing go faster by creating a private digital diary of the places you visit. Scan the official QR codes wherever you see them and add manual entries for your visits to other places.

Use Bluetooth Tracing to enable the Exposure Notification System on your phone.

Sign up for contact alerts in case you’ve checked into a location at the same time as someone with COVID-19, or exchanged anonymous Bluetooth keys with someone with COVID-19.

If you’re found to have COVID-19, you can share your digital diary with contact tracers. This will help us identify whether any of your friends, whānau or community members may have also been exposed, so we can respond quickly and stop any further spread of the virus in New Zealand.

If you test positive for COVID-19, you can also upload your anonymous Bluetooth Tracing keys so that other app users who have been close to you will be quickly notified. This helps to keep your friends, whanau and community safe without compromising on your privacy.

Register your contact information so contact tracers can get in touch if they need to.

The Ministry of Health has worked closely with the Privacy Commissioner and independent security experts during the development of NZ COVID Tracer to ensure your privacy and data security are protected.

Your digital diary will be stored securely on your phone and deleted automatically after 60 days. Any personal information you choose to share with contact tracers will be used only for public health purposes and never for enforcement.

Information about who you have encountered using Bluetooth Tracing will never leave your phone and is automatically deleted after 14 days.

Hey app is good and I use it all the time bit wanted to throw out an idea that would make it much more user friendly, a big complaint of people I'm sure. I know it may be a bit awkward to allow the phone privacy permissions for this but it would be really great if you could make it somehow be used as a lock screen background. It would be great to be able to scan in places by just pressing the power button, having the scan work while on the lock screen and then being able to simply turn off. Ty!

Was good to start with, but the updates have slowed things down to a crawl. The latest update is appalling. App now freezes or crashes when I go back to Finish. It is very slow to open. Today it was still trying to check exposure keys for over an hour. This setting is already turned off. I also don't use Bluetooth, so that was off too. Had to reboot to stop it. My phone is new and running Android 10. It hasn't updated to 11 yet. If it continues toward becoming unusable I'll ditch the app.

It took a bit of searching to find it, but downloaded and installed and registered without incident. The elephant in the room: - what about places in the country that don't have QR codes displayed.? I cannot understand why this app doesn't have the ability to track you using GPS. OK, I get that some people are uneasy about an app tracking them all the time but, the obvious solution to this is to make GPS location tracking optional! If you don't want this, turn it off and mess around with QR codes instead! How is an app that records where you are and stores that information on your phone (and only on your phone) any different from an app that requires you to photograph a QR code and stores that on your phone. The only difference I can see is that one does a much better job of keeping track of where you have been and doesn't require you to remember to sign in to each place. So 3 stars - no glaring bugs yet, but it's an app that fails to leverage the fact that there are 24 satellites in orbit dedicated to this very task and virtually every smartphone has support for GPS built in. I think it will ultimately fail to be a useful tool for that reason.
