MEMS Score


Many new smartphone applications like indoor navigation, augmented reality or immersive games require data from inertial measurement units (IMU) consisting of accelerometers and gyroscopes. Although the accuracy of the inertial sensors directly affects the soundness of these mobile applications, so far no standardized tests exist to assess their quality. MEMS Score was developed for this exact purpose. It utilizes the camera of the phone as a reference to estimate the quality of the inertial sensor data. MEMS Score does not require special equipment1 and is able reveal significant discrepancies between different phone models.

Three tests for your device:

MEMS Score offers three tests that should help you to evaluate whether your device is fit for applications like augemented- and virtual reality:
• The first test evaluates the static accuracy of the Game Rotation Vector and the Linear Acceleration Sensor.
• The second test evaluates the dynamic accuracy of the Game Rotation Vector.
• With the last test you can evaluate which sensors are available on your device.

Easy to understand rating:

Each test presents two indicators for the result of a test. The first value is the measured value. In the case of the image to the left this is the highest distance the linear acceleration sensor diverged from the desired value. The second indicator displays the suitability or ranking of the sensor in stars. The higher the rating, the better the sensors.

Compare your device with others:

MEMS Score allows users to compare their devices with other devices. You can either compare the overall rating of your device with the rating of other devices or only compare the results of one specific test or sensor.
