Handwriting not for a newbie The need for proper strokes is not for a newbie like me. Only know about 350 kanji. I can guess some of the order but still it is still not accurate enough. Without the handwriting ability, this app is no different than other similar apps. I prefer tangorin, purely for the GUI which i found less confusing.

Better and smaller (WWWJDIC=4.53MB) than Takoboto (=151MB)!¡! PLUS the FREE version has the SAME features as the paid one, which the developer calls the donate version! The info page for WWWJDIC Donate says in part: "Try the free version first, and buy this one if you find it useful. Features are the same." How cool is that?!? I just finished reviewing & then uninstalling Takoboto. I compared it to WWWJDIC, so you might find that review helpful. Thanks to the developer for all your hard work!

Nice app Very good app, one thing that is missing is the 'stroke order' option from the kanji screen. This option exists in 'Kanji Recognizer', but because of that i have to switch from one app to another to have the stroke order. Would be nice to have the stroke order button available in WWWJDIC, if you purchased the premium version of Kanji Recognizer.

350 is more than enough, as long as you know their stroke order correctly. See my other kanji app, it has kanji training mode.

The stroke order option has always been available, just press the pencil icon at the bottom of the screen. No need to switch apps.

Great kanji lookup up Great app with a lot of info on individual kanji, on and kun reading, stroke order, radical, etc. The only thing I can see that could use improvement is compound look up. It is pretty much a disorganized jumble. Fortunately it uses the same numbing system as my dictionary so I can cross reference pretty easily.

Compound lookup is supported, but you need a Japanese IME for input. If you are referring to handwriting input, you can use Kanji Recognizer (premium) + Simeji/Google IME (any IME that supports Simeji's 'mushroom' protocol)

Has this project died? I get zero results from even the simplest searches. Finally even tried just the character "小" as the object of kanji lookup, English translation, stroke count, etc. (with various dictionary selections). All searches returned "0 result(s)". I hope this useless outcome is temporary, but the status of the app's web page is not encouraging. This app review process is the only apparent support option.

Results are returned by WWWJDIC servers, which sometimes have problems. Go to Settings and select a different mirror site if you get zero results or other connectivity problems. BTW, support email is in the app description.

APP DOES NOT WORK. I love the JDIC website, but this app is broken. I cannot search any term. I search up "airport" it gives no results. I'm using general library and English word search, still nothing. Please help!

This usually indicates a problem with the mirror site you are using. Go to Settings->WWWJDIC Settings, uncheck 'Mirror auto select' and choose another mirror site.

Text-to-speech (TTS) is supported, but requires a TTS engine with Japanese support. Latest version should work automatically with Google TTS.

Makes it easy to find kanji The handwriting recognition in this app is the best I have found. It finds the right kanji every time. There are still some technical issues with it though. Some of the icons at the bottom of the app do not work and the history and favorite icons are swapped. It also doesn't do a very good job of keeping search history

Almost perfect if... I love the browser version, but I wish I could look up actual kanji words anf see what they read like together. Whenever I try to search kanji words, it never gives me the reading together. They are separated into two kanjis.

It is 'the rank-order frequency of occurrence of the kanji in Japanese', based on analysis of some corpus of contemporary Japanese text (newspapers, etc.). See the kanjdic home page for details.

Search issues- simple fix Had issues calling up sample sentences and definitions. Fixed it when I turned off the default setting configured for auto mirror select.

How do I disable TTS? My phone memory is almost full and I have no desire to download the Japanese TTS files. But every time I click on an entry, it tries to invoke TTS and then complains I don't have TTS on my phone. I'm fine with the kana for pronunciation; no need to hear the audio.

Best Japanese kanji recognition app out there Excellent!! update: the latest update completely ruined the ocr feature... it returns zero results even when im trying out super simple kanjis like 一 or 女. Please fix.. or is there a way to undo an update?

OCR works just as before. Recognition depends on font size, background, etc. It works best with black text on white background, with standard fonts.

This program is great but Japanese is often written vertically, and the OCR function only recognizes horizontal orientation.
