Update Oct 2017. Tried this app again. Still hate it. I just want to listen to yesterday's All Things Consider, which I can do here, if I manually pick each story one at a time. Please go back to supporting the NPR News App. Between every story, there's a 15sec blurb about how awesome NPR One is. I'm already listening. Why are you doing this? Also generic promos for stories you're about to hear. Just play the story already. I liked the old NPR app because it cut out all the fluff and local news. I'm probably going to go back.
I love the easy access to the current national newscast. Unfortunately, it won't let me save a new home station, and asks me to sign in constantly, even if I just did a few seconds ago. Hope they work the bugs out, but at present, it's pretty disappointing.
Why do I have to login with a password EVERY time I launch the app. That plus the lack of offline mode and transitions that cut off the last few seconds of each segment make this app so much less useful than just subscribing to the podcasts in individually. Great idea disastrous implementation.
When this app works it is my number 1 source of news. Unfortunately the list of bugs is quite expansive and continues to grow. It constantly plays old stories, it freezes at least 3 times a day, when I move from streaming on my home Wi-Fi to the car I have to restart the app every time, and sometimes resetting the app does nothing to fix the constant buffering it claims to be doing. All in all, I have used this app for nearly a year and will probably continue to do so, but it seems that these issues haven't been addressed and I seriously doubt they ever will at this point.
The app now requires you to sign in to use it which I think is a horrible feature; it was not always like that. It also doesn't allow you to queue up stories like their other app does. I think this app does have more programming available on it which is nice, and sometimes it's nice for random stores to just play instead of having yo search. I probably won't use it ever again for the first two reasons though.
Is it an option to sign in or a requirement? Don't know. I was using it regularly without an account and largely enjoyed it despite the fact the stories didn't update without shutting the app down. Then I hit the sign-in wall. I don't want to create yet another account in a world of accounts. I didn't have to before. NPR doesn't acknowledge this scenario in their help section. "Don't you want your content curated with our fab algorithms?" NO! Just gimme summa dat Robert Siegel in a brown paper bag. Couldn't follow Morning Edition or All Things Considered either.
Take a listen to the new 'Take Me There' deep dive in NPR One. 'Take Me There' is NPR's signature, immersive storytelling. Stories told on location. Stories told from the center of the action. Stories that transport you. Put your headphones on and let us take you there -- to the story...to another environment...or into another person's shoes.
