Tip van een gebruiker: ‘Probeer eens of een roodborstje antwoord geeft op de zang van de app! Kinderen vinden dit fantastisch, papa praat met de vogels kreeg ik als reactie.’
You can also help others identify their plants, no experience needed.
The app is the world’s first dedicated to crowd-sourced plant identification. It brings a virtual community of plant and flower experts to any android mobile device. The app is NOT a field guide and requires no advance knowledge of plants.
App users upload images of unknown flowers and plants they encounter, then real people work to identify the photos. After enough ID votes are entered, the photo poster is emailed or tweeted with the identification.
"Plant and flower ID is one of those tasks that humans are MUCH better at than computers." says John Ellis, the service's founder. "For example the automated LeafSnap app was developed by some of the world's best image processing experts BUT -- the app is limited to trees --- only trees in the northeast United States-- requires the user to tape a leaf flat to a paper-- and even with these restrictions has a high failure rate."
"While image processing excels at applications having a limited universe of possible matches (like the OCR used to turn scanned documents into text) it fails when there are millions of possible matches. Plant life is so diverse it just isn't a good fit for image processing. " Added Ellis “Our new app lets the user snap a pic of any plant flower or tree they encounter without restriction, and upload it to our expert community for identification.”
Mister Smarty Plants™ has been recognized by gardening writers at The Denver Post, Ohio.com and The Roanoke Times. Since launching, Mister Smarty Plants™ has helped ID over 1,000 plants, trees, bushes and flowers from Senegal to Pakistan, and the Caribbean to the United Kingdom. See some of the ID'd flowers here http://www.mistersmartyplants.com/NamedPlants.aspx
The App contains both botanical and commonly known names, and includes details of flower colours, blooming seasons, preferred soil ph, and most suitable locations for habitation. A linked Learning Hub will offer an additional layer of information and resources to support teachers and learners as well as facilitate citizen scientist and custodianship of plants. (Crowd-sourcing).
PLEASE NOTE: This app was developed in 48 hours as part of GovHack 2014: http://hackerspace.govhack.org/content/what-grows-here - the User Interface is very rough at this stage. With each choice the list of possible plants shrinks, getting to one species with about 3 to 6 attributes.
The app suggests lists based on ease of use, effectiveness, and remaining species
Confirm identifications by comparing with photos or descriptions
Plant book references with page numbers provided for each species
An interactive glossary of botanical terminology with scientific illustrations
Access to all data for each species
Alphabetize the species list by either common or scientific name or search by entering a name.
In-application documentation is available by tapping Menu > Help, or printing from http://flora-id-northwest.com/?page_id=247
The apps are based on our comprehensive interactive keys for PCs, which are subsets of the largest and most extensive database of plant characteristics produced anywhere. We sincerely appreciate the individuals, agencies, and institutions over the years that have graciously allowed us to include their copyrighted plant photos in our programs. Even with over 250 sources of photos, not all are of the highest quality. They are the best available and are included here for the help they provide for correct identifications.
Our keys run in software by XID Services, Inc. Richard Old of XID Services has produced an app available in this store and similar to ours, titled “1,000 Weeds of North America.” His weed app is based on a PC version 1200 Weeds of North America, which is the most comprehensive weed identification reference in North America.
