Bornholmsstugan is a successor to the esteemed Bornholmslek®. Characteristic of both applications is that they are based on a scientific basis and a theoretical view on reading, where phonological awareness is a basic prerequisite for a safe reading and writing development.
Once the children have understood the connection between letter and language sounds and begin to sound their first words together, they need to practice the newly acquired skill and get fluency in reading. Bornholmsstugan is one of several ways to get the reading automated.
Bornholmsstugan combines reading of individual words and reading comprehension. The words are all soundly spelled and follow a careful structure. They are divided into five levels of difficulty.
After the words have been practiced at each level, the reader has access to a number of books in the special "Reading Room", where the read words can now be applied in running text. A few words with unmistakable spelling may appear in the stories, but these are then placed in a sentence, which facilitates reading and understanding of the text.
Practicing the reading flow in a fun way gives motivation to want to read more. This forms the basis for a favorable reading development.
