This dictionary app reflects the content of the fifteenth edition of the Swedish Academy's dictionary, SAOL 15, from 2026. The dictionary is based on the lexical database that has been prepared and is being further developed at the Språkbanken at the Department of Swedish, Multilingualism and Language Technology, University of Gothenburg.
What is SAOL?
SAOL 15 primarily provides recommendations on spelling, word inflection and word formation of a large selection of Swedish words. In addition, information is also provided about the pronunciation and usage of the words, and in many cases also brief meaning information.
SAOL should not be confused with the definition dictionary Svensk ordbok published by the Swedish Academy (SO) and the historically oriented work Svenska Akademiens ordbok (SAOB).
Major changes for SAOL 15
The editorial team for SAOL 15, in consultation with the Swedish Academy, has had four focus areas regarding the content:
* addition of search terms and phasing out obsolete ones
- approx. 2,800 newly added search terms
- approx. 1,500 phasing out search terms
* establishment of particle verbs and reflexive verbs as independent search terms with printed conjugation forms
* a more open attitude towards loanwords and s-plural
- the number of recommendations of the type Use rather, such as refers to loanwords, is somewhat fewer
- words that are usually inflected with -s in the plural have been given such a form as an alternative
* refinement of SAOL's focus in relation to SO and SAOB
- focus on spelling and inflection
- slightly less emphasis on phrases, which is more one of SO's areas
