Description
Kanji by Hand teaches you how to write Japanese kanji by hand. You draw the characters on the screen and Kanji by Hand will judge if they are correct or not. Writing is the best way to learn, since it makes you active in the learning process.
If you want to try it out before buying, you can try Kana by Hand. It's a free version that only includes hiragana and katakana, but otherwise works the same way.
Advanced writing tutor
Kanji by Hand is smart and tells you when you make mistakes. When reviewing your results, you can click on the answer to see the stroke order animated. You'll be quizzed on the basic characters and words which illustrate their use.
Full kanji character set
Kanji by Hand will teach you how to all Japanese kanji you'll ever need. More than 2500 characters are included, but don't worry, it starts with the easy ones and let's you progress at your own pace. It also includes more than 10 000 common Japanese words that show how the different characters combine to form words.
Spaced repetition for maximum retention
Kanji by Hand uses spaced repetition to make it easy for you to learn and remember. Easy stuff is repeated more seldom, and the hard things come back more often. For the best effect, try to do your reviews every day.
Sync your devices
If you have both a tablet and a phone, you can set the same account name on them to get your progress data synced automatically. It also works as a backup of your data in case anything happens to your phone. That's why you need to accept some permissions to install it, so it can access the network and sync your device.
On your device, just go to Settings -> Accounts & sync -> Kana by Hand -> Account Settings and change the account name so it's the same on all your devices.

Awesome This is a really good app for learning kanji. Teaches conjugations and not just stand-alone kanji.

Fantastic This app shows a lot of promise. Very nicely made indeed.

A lot of potential Is frustratingly persnickety about some items, but good practice. Reminds me of an old favorite from WinMo, King Kanji.

Write Kanji
This application is for everyone who learn Kanji as a hobby.
You create a personal Kanji collection by creating Kanji by drawing and practice them in small exercises of 10 Kanji each by trying to remember the right drawing and by comparing it to the ideal drawing you created.
You can also create a vocabulary to memorize the usage of the Kanji. You can practice vocable with exercises of 10 vocable each.
It is possible to share your Kanji and vocabulary over Bluetooth.
To use this application it is recommended to have a appropriate input method installed to be able to enter Kanji.
Kanji Draw
leafdigital Kanji draw is a simple application that lets you draw Japanese characters (kanji) using the touch screen. It is intended for Japanese language learners who might need to enter characters in order to look them up in a dictionary or enter them on a website.
Open source software. Free and no ads.
It identifies the character you have drawn using a special form of handwriting recognition. You can select the correct character from a list. After entering one or more characters, you can copy them into the clipboard as text for use in a dictionary.
Note that this will NOT work - at all - if you don't know basically how to draw kanji. If you just draw something any old way that looks like it, it certainly won't be recognised. You have to draw characters basically the official way.
That said there are two forms of recognition: exact (you must enter the character with the correct stroke count, stroke order, and direction) and inexact (you must draw basically the correct strokes but can use any order and direction). If the inexact search doesn't find it, you can try searching for characters with 1 stroke more or fewer than you drew.
This might sound complicated but the interface is easy; you get exact results straight away, if it's not there then hit the button and wait for inexact results (this takes several seconds, there's a progress bar), and if it's not there either, you can go onto the +/- 1 results.
Notes:
- If you've drawn a character and the 'Done' button is still greyed out, this is because it's still loading the data file. It usually only takes a few seconds, so please wait. This only happens the first time you draw a character after starting the app.
- Some characters don't work very well if you draw them in the normal handwriting style. The data is based on print style. If you have difficulty getting a character recognised, try drawing it like the print version.
This program is released under GNU Public License version 3. It's based on the leafdigital kanjirecog library, which is already released under that license. https://github.com/quen/kanjirecog/tree/android
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT - Uses kanji drawing database derived from the SVG kanji stroke order images produced by the KanjiVG project and released under Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 license. See kanjivg.tagaini.net.

This is a kanji-lookup tool based on the book "Remembering the Kanji" by James Heisig. You can translate a string of keywords into a string of kanji. It also works in the reverse direction, translating a string of kanji into a string of keywords.
You can copy the output string to your clipboard and then paste it into your favorite dictionary. There is also a direct look up option for aedict (made by Martin Vysny, by far the best Japanese dictionary available for Android, it's available for free on the market).
You can also import a custom dictionary. Custom dictionaries must be saved into the "K2K" folder of your SD card. They must be .txt or .csv extensions. The format of the dictionary must be one entry per line, with one line consisting of the kanji, a comma (no space after), and the keyword, like so:
一,one
二,two
Also, custom dictionaries must be saved with UTF-8 text encoding.
I designed this app to help me with my own Japanese study, and it's been an invaluable tool. This is the fastest way to look up a word in kanji when you're reading printed material and you don't know the Japanese reading of the word.
*note: If the Heisig keyword is more than one word, such as "elder brother", you must use the "separate by commas" option.
Kanji Checker
OCR of Japanese characters + built-in dictionary (English translation.)
With this app you will be able to check the meaning and the pronunciation of Japanese words containing kanji, whenever you want in 10 seconds (or less with recent devices) by recognizing the characters from your camera.
Therefore, you won't be bothered when you encounter a kanji you don't know.
Ideal for people who read books in Japanese, people who are learning Japanese.
Not for people who can't read Japanese at all, as this is not a translator but a dictionary.
Features:
- No need to take pictures (i.e. no sound.) This app was designed to capture in preview mode, very fast and precise.
- No internet connection required. A Japanese to English dictionary is built-in.
- Simple, intuitive, very easy to use.
Twitter: http://twitter.com/kanjicheck
Please report bugs, feedback, feature requests to the twitter account or by reviewing.
I am also using this app and I'll do my best to fix any inconvenience.
---- Main usage
1. Launch the app.
2. Move your device so that the circle at the center of the screen comes over the first character to recognize.
3. Adjust the focus. (You can use the "Refocus" button.)
---- In detail
OCR features:
- Recognition of vertical and horizontal texts. Automatic detection of the orientation. (Works best with vertical texts.)
- Recognition of fonts commonly used in books.
- Works best with characters printed on paper (without color changes, with a minimum of contrast with the background.)
Other features:
- Ability to use the camera flash in torch mode to enlighten the text. Useful when you're reading a book.
- Focus modes: macro (to read books) / auto (for other purposes.)
- History of the last recognitions.
- Languages for the interface: Japanese, English, French.
Requirements:
- Storage: around 100MB of storage (SD card or internal) is required for data installation.
- RAM: around 20MB of RAM for OCR.
- Camera: some focus modes and flash modes may be unavailable on certain devices. These modes will be disabled if unavailable.
Tested on:
- Sharp SH-10D (dual core 1.5GHz, 4.5 inches 720x1280, android 4.0.4)
- Sharp IS05 (single core 1GHz, 3.4 inches 480x854, android 2.3.4)
- Kyocera DIGNO ISW11K (single core 1.4GHz, 4.0 inches 480x800, android 2.3.5)
On old devices, the accuracy of character recognition might depend on the performance of camera (resolution in preview mode, image quality.)
If you want to test features on your device, try the free app "Eigo Checker". It's almost the same app except that it's for the English language.
---- Troubleshooting
- If you encounter an error after updating your android device, try to re-install (install after uninstalling once) this app.
- If you don't understand how to use this app, please check the web site of this app, or contact me.
