BusyBox is a software application that provides many standard Unix tools, much like the larger (but more capable) GNU Core Utilities. BusyBox is designed to be a small executable for use with the Linux kernel, which makes it ideal for use with embedded devices. It has been self-dubbed "The Swiss Army Knife of Embedded Linux".
Leave this installed if you always want to get the latest version of busybox!
Let me say from the outset, that I have no idea what busybox does, or how it does it. Hence the mid-range rating. But I don't need to know. I just clicked a button and it installed. I presume that it replaces and tweaks certain elements of the Android OS in order to make it more efficient. Again, I don't know if this is correct or if I'm barking up the wrong tree completely. Anyway, it says that if you have your device rooted then you need it. That's good enough for me and millions of others.
To the many people who are wondering about the purpose of this app, it makes available a number of Linux commands (and consequently. Shell scripts) which don't come bundled in android. FYI, Android is essentially based on Linux but heavily modified. That is why busybox is needed for most apps with root access.
