About this app

This application is used by professional Arboricultural Consultants to carry out Tree Safety & Risk Assessment Surveys as part of the OTISS system. This app and your GPS-enabled android phone or tablet is an alternative to buying specialised and expensive survey equipment for on-site data collection.

The Tree Survey app works with the www.otiss.co.uk website to provide a range of maps and tools for carrying out tree surveys, tree management surveys and report generation.

All users must first register for an account on the OTISS website. A free 30 day evaluation period is allowed, after which an annual subscription will be charged for continued use of the OTISS system - see the OTISS website for more details. Note: this Tree Survey application is free to download, evaluate and use – no charges are made to your phone or Google accounts.

The OTISS system works as follows. (i) First, a survey is created on the OTISS website. (ii) The Tree Survey app is then used to download the survey to the Android device. (iii) The app is used to carry out the survey by placing trees and site furniture on the map and entering inspection data. (iv) The survey data is then sync’ed back to the OTISS website. (v) OTISS website provides tools to view, modify, analyse and generate reports on the collected inspection data.

Ratings and reviews

I have been using Otiss for 2 years now for BS5837 and tree safety surveys and can highly recommend it. I am not the best with computers and have found the software user friendly. There are plenty of lessons on the site for how to do things and when I do get stuck the customer support is great as they are always on the end of the phone to help. It has made surveying so much more straight forward and more accurate for me. It is easily customisable and they are always looking to improve and develop the software around the user e.g. A while ago I needed to add what.three.words addresses to some surveys and when I contacted Otiss they said that a couple of people had requested this. Not long after I got in touch they had added this function to the site. If using a mobile phone to plot trees I would use one with a GPS attachment if possible as I found the standard GPS on a phone to be a bit too unreliable particularly in densely wooded areas where it is difficult to plot accurately using the map.

Need more accuracy and tools (label)

I have been waiting for something like this. It seems simple and easy to use.

+ A major improvement to the way we fill in the reference/tag number for the trees, groups and hedges.
+ While on-site, you can update the Site Description and the Survey Report using the 'Update Survey Info' menu option.
+ When re-surveying a tree, you can use the Record Work Done button to update any recommendations from the 'previous' survey.
