About this app

The NHS COVID-19 app is the official contact tracing app for England and Wales and is one of the fastest ways of knowing if you’re at risk from COVID-19. For your vaccination status (England only) use the separate NHS app, go to www.nhs.uk/app

COVID-19 has not gone away, so it’s important to remember the actions you can take to keep yourself and others safe. Everybody needs to continue to act carefully and remain cautious.

Download the app and keep it up to date to receive the latest guidance.

The app uses proven privacy software developed by Apple and Google, designed so that nobody will know who or where you are. You can delete your data, or the app, at any time.

The NHS COVID-19 app features:

Alerts: Find out when you’ve been near other app users who have since tested positive for COVID-19.

Latest information: Find out the latest COVID-19 guidance and know the level of COVID-19 risk in your local area.

Symptoms: Check if you have COVID-19 symptoms and follow the latest guidance.

Test: Register your results if you test positive.

Available in English, Welsh, Arabic (Modern Standard), Bengali, Chinese (Simplified), Gujarati, Polish, Punjabi (Gurmukhi script), Romanian, Somali, Turkish and Urdu.

The app can be used when travelling across England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Jersey and Gibraltar, detecting contact tracing app users (regardless of them using different official apps), and alerting them if they have been in contact with someone who later reported a positive test result in the app.

The app has been built in collaboration with some of the most innovative organisations in the world. We have worked with medical experts, privacy groups, at-risk communities and we’ve shared knowledge with the teams working on similar apps in many countries.

The app is UKCA marked as Class I medical device in the United Kingdom and developed in compliance with Medical Devices Regulations 2002 (SI 2002 No 618, as amended).

App was just left on my device once all UK restrictions were lifted. After a weekend away, (Nov 2022) myself and 3 others were pinged to say we'd been in close contact with a covid positive, it's good that the app still gives you the heads up in case you do become unwell and you can also reduce contact and lessen the risk to anybody classed as vulnerable.

It's annoying, as I get a '1' showing on the icon saying there's something new to look at but nothing new appears when I go to it! There was something about upgrading it but not how to do it. What exactly is it for now that there's no obligation to curb COVID transmission or report anything anyway? It's largely disappeared from news reporting so most people can't be bothered.

This app appears to work well. It's always on and working for me. I've been pinged a few times, which has resulted in a response, I've notified when I tested positive, hopefully pinging others where necessary. Anything to help keep us safe is good in my book. If the various services had been more joined up, via the app, it would have been perfect.
