About this app

The Safer Seas & Rivers Service is the only national real-time water quality service protecting all water users from pollution. The pioneering service alerts water users when untreated sewage is discharged into waterways as well as when water quality is temporarily reduced at over 370 locations across the UK. This information empowers you to make informed decisions about when to use the sea and rivers. The app also includes complementary beach information including tide times and lifeguard services.

When untreated sewage is discharged, Surfers Against Sewage is automatically notified by water companies and a real-time sewage alert is sent through the app so you can avoid it. Water quality can also be reduced by heavy rainfall causing the input of multiple, often unidentified pollution sources, including road, urban and agricultural run-off. When these sources combine, they can often have a significant impact on water quality. The app also includes daily pollution risk forecasts made by the Environment Agency, NRW and SEPA for over 300 locations.

Through the Safer Seas & Rivers Service, you can also tell Surfers Against Sewage if you have been made sick from the sea, helping their campaigning. Simply send a Health Report through the app.

Want to highlight the issue of water quality to your local politician and water company CEO? Email them directly from the app when there is a pollution alert.
