About this app

*** Winner of Most Innovative App at MTN App of the Year awards ***
Endorsed by BirdLife South Africa

BirdPro is the ultimate app for identifying and appreciating the birds of Southern Africa.

You can download and test the app for free with a sample of 100 birds, and when you are ready you can upgrade to:
- Southern Africa
- South Africa
- Namibia
- Botswana
- Zimbabwe
- Mozambique
- Kruger National Park

BirdPro boasts an award winning identification tool and has a vast source of information:
- Over 7000 beautiful and diagnostic images from various angles and of all variants, e.g. immature, males, females, dark, light morphs, different races, etc. You can even show the actual size of eggs!
- Over 2100 comprehensive and clear bird calls
- Informative and comprehensive information on each bird
- Interactive and accurate distribution maps, even showing monthly migration patterns.
- Names of birds in 16 languages, including most native South African languages as well as German, French and Portuguese.

BirdPro contains the most accurate Image Recognition on the market for SA birds. You can use images from your device camera or photo gallery.

The SmartSearch function allows you to select your current, or any other location and the birds at that location will be filtered. Over and above the GPS location, you can search by shape, type, colours, size, where seen, bird calls and more. There are 100's of attributes you can choose from, which makes identifying a bird accurate and easy. As a first ever bird app achievement, the resulting bird list is sorted by relevance with the most probable birds matching your search criteria at the top, which makes it extremely quick and accurate. The ability to remove birds from the results is a game-changer.

BirdPro also boasts the most sophisticated "Similars" function on the market which allows you to see birds similar to the one you have on the screen.

You can log your sightings with trip descriptions, date, your own photos and notes, which are then indicated as pins on the distribution maps. Sighting lists can be viewed and synced to a website so you can share between devices - even between Apple and Android devices.

No internet connectivity is required to operate the app after it is installed which makes it possible to use the app in the most remote locations.

All updates are regular and free.

Please note: Family Sharing is not supported by Google for in-app purchases, which is the model used in BirdPro.

This review is for the Namibia 2.88 version of the app. Works mostly as advertised, but the map zoom function doesn't work for the northern part of Namibia. The bird search function is a waste of time - coming up with suggestions that are not remotely related to what I am searching for. Both issues were reported to the developers by me and others last year, but remain unresolved. I messaged the developers a few weeks ago, asking about this. Read but not answered. Very disappointing.

The Search function is horrible. I can type something into the search box, for instance "barbet", and the first 6 recommendations don't have anything remotely connected to "barbet" in them, including Booted Eagle, Black Heron and Bar-throated Apalis. On many occasions the bird I'm looking for does not even appear in the "best match" list. It's enough to make me not renew my subscription which is currently on hold. Device is a Xiaomi Redmi Note.

Thank you for the feedback. There seems to be something weird going on here! We will investigate and fix this as soon as possible.

This app is amazing for identifying unknown birds. The search function is great! The detailed writing, photos, distribution maps and UI are also well done. I am just a tad bit disappointed that there are quite a lot of bird calls missing (compared to Roberts)- don't know if it might be a glitch on my app only? But still using Roberts in conjunction with BirdPro for now.
