Stay safe with unknown tracker alerts

Bluetooth trackers can help you find important items, but they also bring the potential of unwanted tracking. Unknown tracker alerts are built into devices that support Android 6.0 and above with Google Play Services. You’ll automatically get a notification when your phone determines that an unknown tracker is moving with you – here’s how you can use these alerts.
What are tracker tags?
Tracker tags are small Bluetooth devices that you can attach to important items like your car keys or wallet, and can show you where your misplaced belongings are. But in some cases, these trackers may be used to track people without their knowledge.
Find unknown trackers
Your Android phone can now notify you if an unknown Bluetooth tracker is seen moving with you. Unknown tracker alerts currently work with Apple AirTags. Google continues to work with tag manufacturers to expand this important protection to other tracking tags over time. You can tap the notification to learn more about the tracker, and see a map of where it has been traveling with you. If you tap “Play sound,” the tracker can make a noise to help you locate it – without alerting its owner.
Take action on an alert
You can use your phone to scan some models of trackers to reveal its serial number or additional information about its owner, like the last four digits of their phone number. You’ll also be able to view instructions to physically disable a tracker and stop it from updating its location.
Scan your surroundings
There may be times when you want to proactively check your surroundings for nearby trackers. To do this, go to Settings > Safety & emergency > Unknown tracker alerts, and tap the “Scan Now” button. Your device will then show you any trackers determined to be near you and separated from their owners. Tap on the listed trackers to get tips on what to do next.
Now that you know about these alerts and what to do if you receive one, you can take steps to stay safe from unwanted tracking.
