Gaele Hi
AudioBook Review: Stars: Overall 4 Narration: 4 Story: 4 Picking up with the threat of Pickleman still looming, Sophronia has gained skills, knowledge and plenty of experience in her years as Mademoiselle Geraldine’s student, picking up tricks in espionage, self-sufficiency and loyalty – even as the threats seem to be never ending. When you add in dashes of silliness (for this series has those aplenty) and some intriguing conversations, moments of true friendship and some serious moments of tension and action – almost non-stop actually – the story fits neatly into the series, and presents a wrap-up, of sorts, to a series that combined humor, history and action with some never-before experienced creatures in situations that only could come from Carriger’s pen. Sophronia has been a highlight in this series for me – she’s determined to make her own choices after (mostly) careful thought, and has managed to learn, succeed, and even thrive through all of the adventures, making friends and gaining suitors throughout. While she’s lost the companionship of Sidheag, she’s got Agatha who’s moved on to gain skills and talents as well as the ongoing triangle, that comes with a solution between Felix and Soap. Oh there is a choice to be made, and while I wasn’t completely sold on that conclusion, Carriger did make it feel right for both Sophronia and the story’s overall plotting arc. A clever and often silly set of circumstances that kept me engaged and amused, and brought much of the loose ends to conclusion. Narration is again provided by Moira Quirk and she’s managed to capture each moment, each character with a sense of ‘who’ they are, while not giving away or overworking emotions or a sense that there is more in store for the characters. The words stood solidly as presented, carrying that sense of fun and amusement that is contained within all of Carriger’s novels. I received an AudioBook copy of the title from Hachette Audio for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: al conclusions are my own responsibility.
