About this audiobook

From the author of The Phoenix Keeper comes an era-defining new fantasy universe where spicy romantasy meets the Cosmere, unmissable for fans of the world-building scale of Sarah J. Maas and the world-shifting stakes of Rebecca Yarros. Voidwalker will be your next romantasy obsession, a deliciously feral story that starts with just two words: "bite me."

Fionamara is a smuggler. Antal is the reason her people fear the dark. Fi ferries contraband between worlds, stockpiling funds and stolen magic to keep her village self-sufficient - free from the blood sacrifices humans have paid to Antal's immortal species for centuries.

Only legends whispered through the pine forests recall a time when things were different, before one world shattered into many, and the flesh-devouring beasts crept from the cracks between realities, with their sable antlers and slender tails, lethal claws and gleaming fangs. Now, mortal lives are food to pacify their carnivorous overlords, exchanged for feudal protection, and the precious silver energy that fuels everything from transport to weaponry.

When Fi gets planted with a stash of smuggled energy, a long-lost flame recruits her for a reckless heist that escalates into a terrorist bombing - and a coup against the reigning immortals, with Fi's home caught in the crossfire.

She's always known the dangers of her trade - and of the power she's wielded since childhood, allowing her to see the secret doors between dimensions, to walk the Void itself. But nothing could have prepared her for crossing paths with Antal. For the deal she'll have to make with him, a forced partnership to reclaim his city that begins as a desperate bid for survival, only to grow into something far more dangerous.

A revolution. And a temptation - for how sweet the monster's fangs might feel.

Voidwalker, first book and the Beast of the void series. Scheduled to publish 8/19/2025. This was a great monster romance! We follow Fionamara aka Fi, a smuggler into a new hired job. She ferries contraband between worlds, stockpiling funds, and stolen magic to keep her village self-sufficient. Always with the goal of keeping her people free from blood sacrificing to the immortal species. An immortal species you say, Yes, we follow Antal, the reason that the people fear the dark. Immortal creatures have been requesting human sacrifices for centuries. Fi is astutely aware, cutthroat and willing to sacrifice for the greater good. She has always been good at hiding in the shadows. Being a void walker is unique ability among her kind and a power that she has welded from childhood. What will come of her abilities when she enters dangerous new job? I couldn't get enough of the characters in the story and love their depth. This story had great pace and plot development. The world felt so unique and unfolded perfectly. Lead to more questions as the story continued, leaving me wanting more in this world. This story has adventure, Romance, and darkness within the dimensions. If you want unique world building, Unique characters, and a slow burn this one is for you. This book was thoroughly enjoyed via audiobook thanks to Hatchette for an honest review.

Thank you to Hachette Audio for the ALC. I loved that Fionamara and Antal are both severely flawed characters. Fi runs away from her problems while Antal does his best to ignore them. Fair warning to everyone: Antal is a monster that survives with eating humans. And Fi is a human. So yeah, that is definitely a barrier to their relationship. I like an enemies-to-lovers trope where the main characters are literally enemies. And it’s once they are forced to work together against a common enemy (so many enemies in this one NGL), that Fi discovers that Antal is basically a broody little housesat with antlers. I liked getting to know both of them better, and see how they interacted with the other townspeople—especially her brother Boden. This one was a mix of fun, sexy, depressing, and hopeful, and I’m looking forward to the next from this author. The audio was especially the best way to read, the accents were spot on.

About the author

S. A. MacLean is a fantasy romance author from sunny Southern California. Infatuated with magical worlds since her days of brewing mud potions in her childhood garden, she fell in love with the romantasy genre after realizing all her favorite fantasy novels had kisses in them. Her stories invariably feature quirky humor, sassy animal companions, and queer casts who represent her voice as a chaotic bisexual woman. Sarah received her BS in Natural Resources from Cornell University and a PhD in Environmental Science from UC Berkeley. She left the research track to teach environmental science at her local community college, inspiring the next generation of students to save the planet.
