When the doorbell rang, I wiped my hands on my pants, feeling way more nervous than I should have.

It was just a guy coming to get his cat. There was no reason to feel this way. But when I glanced through the peephole, the guy standing there was so tall, I could barely see the bottom of his face. His body blocked my view of the rest of the porch. That's how big this guy was.

I was home alone, and he was a stranger.

There’s probably some rule about this that mothers teach their daughters when they're young. Like, "Always have a friend there when you're going to invite strange men to your home.”

But somehow the nerves coursing through me felt a whole lot more like excitement than fear.

Good lord, this was probably a sign I hadn’t had a date in far too long. Just the sight of a man on Valentine's Day had me all giddy.

He probably wasn't even single.

And he was probably starting to think I hadn't heard the doorbell, so when I saw him reach out to knock, I yanked it open. Trying to look normal. Like I hadn't been just sizing him up from the other side.

I hadn't actually been able to see his face through the peephole, and now that I had, I couldn't help but stare. He was terrifying.

But also extremely handsome.

Maybe it was the cut angles of his jaw, or the deep, quiet sharpness to his gaze. And he must have left home in a hurry, because he wasn't wearing a coat. Just a flannel shirt that made him look something like a lumberjack.

I'd never thought a lumberjack could be cute before.
