About this audiobook

Yellowjackets meets The Cloisters in this beguiling coming-of-age story about class, reinvention, and destiny, set against the backdrop of two mysterious deaths.

Middle-class Rosie Macalister has worked for years to fit in with her wealthy friends on the Yale equestrian team. But when she comes back from her junior year abroad with newfound confidence, she finds that the group has been infiltrated by a mysterious intruder: Annelise Tattinger.

A talented tarot reader and a brilliant rider, the enigmatic Annelise is unlike anyone Rosie has ever met. But when one of their friends notices money disappearing from her bank account, Annelise's place in the circle is thrown into question. As the girls turn against each other, the group’s unspoken tensions and assumptions lead to devastating consequences.

It's only after graduation, when Rosie begins a job at a Manhattan hedge fund, that she uncovers Annelise's true identity––and how her place in their elite Yale set was no accident. Is it too late for Rosie to put right what went wrong, or does everyone's luck run out at some point? Set in the heady days of the early aughts, The Fortune Seller is a haunting examination of class, ambition, and the desires that shape our lives.

A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press.

The positive: The audiobook narrator is quite good. The story, though, didn’t work for me at all. In fairness, if the book had a more accurate description, I would not have been interested enough to read it in the first place. My problems summed up: I didn’t expect such a strong YA vibe. The characters seem immature and way too angsty for Yale seniors. None of the characters are likable, and being in Rosie’s head all the time drove me nuts. She continually laments the fact that she’s “poor,” while she’s firmly ensconced in what most of us would consider a comfortable middle class life. Plus, she’s attending Yale! But she wants all the free-flowing cash her spoiled rich friends have. And this seemed to be the basis of the entire plot. Pacing is SLOW. We’re given LOTS of detail on equestrian riding, which all the girls are involved in at the college. We spend time whining about money. But nothing of consequence happens. At the 40% mark, we were still doing the same dance. Graduation wasn’t even on the horizon. I gave up. DNF *Thanks to Macmillan Audio for the free download.*

The Fortune Seller is an adult contemporary novel about a young woman enmeshed in the rivalry behind the equestrian team at Yale. Though not exactly a thriller this is a coming of age novel with elements of mystery and suspense. Starting each chapter with a tarot card and a description of what it means was a really creative way to foreshadow was going to happen next. It has a great pace and a likable main character that struggles balancing her ambition and what is right.
