The escape of Cat Thao's family from persecution traverses the horrific jungles of Khmer Rouge Cambodia and into the crowded refugee camps of Thailand. From which, finally, the Nguyens were allowed to board a Qantas plane to a freedom they wanted desperately. But the stark, contrasting suburban landscapes of Western Sydney, Australia were not the unalloyed blessing they'd imagined.
Against the backdrop of an immigrant experience, Cat Thao tells of her coming of age in Australia, haunted by lingering trauma but buoyed by instincts of hope, reinvention and survival. In a voice both candid and striking, Cat Thao details her struggles with growing up: from her bad skin and hairy legs, to Vietnamese mysticism and kinship, and bound throughout by familial loyalty and honour.
With wit and poignancy, We Are Here explores an Australia of the 80s and 90s, and a family's tireless journey for peace through a young woman's absolute determination to find her place.

Pauline Nguyen tells the honest, difficult story of her family, following the journey of her parents from their homeland in Vietnam on their escape to Thailand as refugees, and then on to their eventual resettlement in Australia. They moved to Sydney's most vibrant and notorious Vietnamese enclave where Pauline and her brother Luke grew up. Pauline, Luke and Pauline's husband Mark Jensen now run Red Lantern, an acclaimed, modern Vietnamese restaurant in Sydney's popular inner-city area of Surry Hills.
At the heart of this story is a love of food. It helped to placate homesickness, became central to the family's early success in Australia and was sometimes the only language the family could use to communicate with each other. In the end, it was this shared passion for food that reconciled the family and help create Red Lantern's success.

From main streets to back alleys, Luke shares his insider knowledge, venturing out with acclaimed photographer Alan Benson at dawn and late into the night to meet roaming street vendors and stallholders. Vibrant local personalities, colourful photographs and stories about the most unique dishes – Street Food Asia brings one of the world’s richest food traditions to life.

About the author:Luke Nguyen is a renowned Vietnamese-Australian chef, best known for his television series Luke Nguyen’s Vietnam, Luke Nguyen’s Greater Mekong and more recently Luke Nguyen’s France. Born in a Thai refugee camp after his parents escaped their homeland in Vietnam, Luke’s family made their way to Australia where Luke was raised in Cabramatta. His parents opened and ran a Vietnamese restaurant called Pho Cay Du and it was this familial passion for food that first ignited Luke’s interest in Vietnamese cooking. After learning the basics from his parents, Luke trained with a number of respected chefs before opening The Red Lantern restaurant. Since then, The Red Lantern has become one of Sydney’s most acclaimed Vietnamese restaurants. Luke has written six cookbooks: Secrets of the Red Lantern, Songs of Sapa, Indochine, Greater Mekong and The Food of Vietnam and Luke Nguyen's France.

Other stories were my feeling and impressions of Vientian with friendliness, Angkor with a ride on elephant, experiences of many travels in Thailand, contrary impression of Myanmar , astonishment in Shenzhen, trading in Singapore, the world is not flat in India, Israeli charity… “Visa” was a special story about my experiences before travels. “Author's confidence” and “Short extracts of other travels” were the last in the book.

A female close to Alex received eternal life in the fourteenth century and is a member of a group known as The Xanda. Alex knows nothing of this. Throughout centuries The Xanda are the ardent guardians in what they perceive to be the precious gift of eternal life. They are ruthless in accomplishing its preservation. They will harm anyone, kill anyone, to ensure the gift is maintained. Crucially, the gift must be accepted once every one hundred and eleven years by the eldest daughter in the Lasalles family or the gift is expunged. Alex refuses and The Xanda creates catastrophic circumstances that resonate throughout Alex’s previously perfect life.
A ghost, Yolande Lasalles, murdered in the eighteenth century by The Xanda when she refused eternal life, becomes Alex’s spirit guide. The only way they can communicate is to utilize the scented white flower of the Datura tree.
Subsequent of Yolande’s and Alex’s evasive tactics, The Xanda create havoc, impinging on the lives of Alex, her close friend Lauren Webb, and Lauren’s toddler daughter. Detective Senior Sergeant Jondhal and his colleague, James Nguyen, slowly but irretrievably also become implicated in Alex’s life with devastating consequences. Both groups fight for survival to the bitter end.
Professional women in Australia were never treated as well as men, and the author faced even more challenges by virtue of being an immigrant. In this memoir, she looks back at the hard work that made her a success and provides business and spiritual tips, such as:• If you have a great business idea, only share it with people who have a genuine interest in supporting you because supposed friends can quickly become enemies. • Attend important business meetings with someone you trust because if you’re alone against a wild shark, there’s a chance you’ll be bitten. • Let go of disappointment and resentment so you can become who you want to be without restrictions. • Release grief by freeing the spirits of loved ones so they can find their way to heaven.
The author, a Reiki master, also explores how anyone can practice the hands on healing system to calm the mind, heal the body, and boost positive energy.
The book was a collection of my experience, impression and feeling of my journey in Australia, the country of meeting points. It included joy, worry, anxiety, surprise and disappointment, suddenness and interest…in Australia. It was the feeling of Melbourne, the green city and its interesting night, “the capital of thickets” - Canberra, busy Sydney, impression of visa, kanguroo, koala and penguin…“Author's confidence” and “Short extracts of other travels” were the last in the book. It was the open finish of this book. The writing was my prayer for peace in the earth, finish bombs, children have many foods, nobody is poverty-stricken, everybody can travel…Please read stories in this book “Travel in Australia, the country of meeting points”. Every story was every interesting meeting point.
So, I have visited five continents, four homelands of the most famous ancient cultures, three biggest countries. It was my dream when I was a little girl and now I have traveled. Also, something urged me to write my feeling, impression of those travels and I want to share with friends, especially want to share with young friends who is hoping about new lands.
This book is not a guide-book to travel. It also was not a list of all my travels or all countries where I came. This book was a collection of my experience, impression and feeling of countries, regions where I visited. It included joy, worry, anxiety, surprise and disappointment, suddenness and interest…Would be more useful when the book was written by bilingual: Vietnamese and English. These bilingual pages could make more enthusiasm and self-confident when you are thinking about trips, preparing or traveling in somewhere. Honestly, when I started writing stories in English, I was unself-confident and knew that I should study so much. One American author, he is my friend, who edited my first stories, laughed when I told that sometimes my English could be “silly” because I was not an American. He said if I though that every American could speak and write English very well then it was not true; United States of America was the country of many people from other countries. It seemed as their “silly” English could make freshness and riches of American-English. It was accepted like as a factor of language development.
In this book, feeling and experience of travels spread from near to far, step by step, in five sections. The first section included stories of Asian travels with the starting point was a story of Hanoi, my native city. The second section was my impression in Australia. My experience and feeling of travels in Europe were presented in the third section. The fourth section was stories of mysterious land - Egypt. The last section included stories of my travel in USA, the country with distance is half of the earth from Vietnam.
Feeling of a oversea travel started from apply for entry visa. Every time I received a new visa on my passport, I got special feeling. It seemed that a door opened in front of my eyes, step by step, with new things. “Visa” also was the name of a story in this book. For many Vietnamese, “visa” (English word) more familiar than “thi thuc” (Vietnamese word). Therefore, VISA is the name of this book. When the book “Visa” is published, it can bring to me the similiar feeling, it opens door for next books with new travels and new others. The world is a big village. Please, let go and come, try and feel.
Thank so much for my friends, who helped me in nice travels and helped me to complete this book.

Telling the stories of real-world communities in a wide range of coastal settings, including America’s Gulf of Mexico coast, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, The Maldives, southern Africa, Bangladesh, and Vietnam, the case studies in Climate Change and the Coast: Building Resilient Communities reveal a rich diversity of adaptation approaches.
A number of common themes emerge that indicate opportunities, barriers, and on-ground realities for progressing adaptation at the coast. At the same time, and partly in response to these initiatives, many of the corporations that undertake large-scale resource exploitation have sought to address concerns regarding the impact of their activities on indigenous peoples by adopting what are generally referred to as "corporate social responsibility" (CSR) policies. This book focuses on such corporate initiatives. It does not treat them in isolation, recognising that their adoption and impact is contextual, and is related both to the wider social and political framework in which they occur and to the activities and initiatives of indigenous peoples. It does not treat them uncritically, recognising that they may in some cases consist of little more than exercises in public relations. However, neither does it approach them cynically, recognising the possibility that, even if CSR policies and activities reflect hard-headed business decisions, and indeed perhaps particularly if they do so, they can generate significant benefits for indigenous peoples if appropriate accountability mechanisms are in place.
In undertaking an in-depth analysis of CSR and indigenous peoples in the extractive industries, the book seeks to answer the following questions. What is the nature and extent of CSR initiatives in the extractive industries and how should they be understood? What motivates companies to pursue CSR policies and activities? How do specific political, social and legal contexts shape corporate behaviour? What is the relationship between indigenous political action and CSR? How and to what extent can corporations be held accountable for their policies and actions? Can CSR help bring about a fundamental change in the distribution of benefits and costs from large-scale resource exploitation and, if so, under what conditions can this occur?
Earth Matters gathers key experts from around the world who discuss corporate initiatives in Alaska, Ecuador, Australia, Canada, Peru, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Russia. The book explores the great diversity that characterises initiatives and policies under the name of "corporate social responsibility", the highly contingent and contextual nature of corporate responses to indigenous demands, and the complex and evolving nature of indigenous–corporate relations. It also reveals much about the conditions under which CSR can contribute to a redistribution of benefits and costs from large-scale resource development.
Earth Matters will be essential reading for those working in and studying the extractive industry worldwide, as well as those readers looking for a state-of-the-art description of how CSR is functioning in perhaps its most difficult setting.
