Enfant de la frontière, Jean-Noël Coghe découvre le rock à Mouscron au début des années soixante et écrit ses premiers articles pour Nord Eclair. A 17 ans, il accompagne en tournée les Animals, Kinks, Small Faces, Moody blues, Vince Taylor, Jimi Hendrix. Il participe aux lancements de Rock and Folk, Best, Extra, Pop Music... En 1979, il opte pour l’information et pige à l’AFP, Le Matin de Paris, France Inter, RMC, puis devient l’envoyé spécial permanent de RTL (Nord de la France et Belgique), poste qu’il a occupé pendant treize ans.
De 1998 à 2002, il publie plusieurs ouvrages rock au Castor Astral. L’un d’eux, Rory Gallagher, est publié en Irlande chez Mercier Press. La première édition est épuisée en trois semaines. En juin 2004, le magazine Mojo le classe en tête des ventes à Londres.
Jean-Noël Coghe a également collaboré à des expositions sur Jimi Hendrix et James Dean, et au futur Musée des Civilisations européennes qui s’installera à Marseille à l’horizon 2013. Une large place y sera consacrée à la musique d’aujourd’hui.
