'The sea is everything. It covers seven tenths of the terrestrial globe. Its breath is pure and healthy. It is an immense desert, where man is never lonely, for he feels life stirring on all sides.'
Scientist Pierre Aronnax and his colleagues set out on an expedition to find a strange sea monster and are captured by the infamous and charismatic Captain Nemo and taken abroad the Nautilus submarine as his prisoners. As they travel the world's oceans, they become embroiled in adventures and events beyond their wildest dreams. Visionary in its outlook, Vern's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is a legendary science fiction masterpiece.
'Phileas Fogg was one of those mathematically exact people, who, never hurried and always ready, are economical of their steps and their motions. He never made one stride too many, always going by the shortest route. He did not give an idle look. He did not allow himself a superfluous gesture.'
When Phileas Fogg wagers a bet that he can travel across the globe in just 80 days, little does he know about the epic journey that he is about to undertake. With his faithful French servant, Passepartout, Phileas Fogg embarks on the adventure of a lifetime, travelling across four continents by whatever means he can - train, elephant, steam ship - and experiencing endless surprises and mishaps along the way.
Summary of the Book
When Alex hears his uncle proclaim that they are about to embark on a quest to find a crater, he is surprised. For one thing, it means leaving his betrothed to go on a mad quest. For another, it means going to Iceland to find a certain crater that leads down into a mysterious world. But Professor Lidenbrock is a hard man to ignore. Fuelled by the spirit of adventure, Alex leaves with Lidenbrock to find this mysterious crater which will take them to a world below the surface. They hire a guide called Hans who takes them to the volcano. Down one of its three craters, these three travellers find a majestic world hidden for centuries, even millennia. Here, prehistoric creatures roam free, and a huge species of man walks upright. Here, there is a large ocean where Palaeolithic creatures rule undeterred by the passage of time. If these three travellers can return home, this discovery will make them rich and famous beyond their wildest dreams. But then again, to do so they will have to find a way out of this world. And so far, there doesn’t seem to be one.
About Jules Verne
Jules Verne was a French novelist best associated with his books Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea, In Search of the Castaways, The Mysterious Island and Around The World In Eighty Days.
The above title has been adapted into several films, including a recent 3-D film by Eric Brevig, starring Brendan Fraser, Anita Briem and Josh Hutcherson. This film is a loose adaptation and is intended to be a sequel rather than a true adaptation of Verne’s text.
‘From that hour we had no further occasion for the exercise of reason, or judgment, or skill, or contrivance. We were henceforth to be hurled along, the playthings of the fierce elements of the deep.’
In Verne’s science-fiction classic, Professor Lidenbrock chances upon an ancient manuscript and pledges to solve the mysterious coded message that lies within it. Eventually he deciphers the story – that of an Icelandic explorer who travels to the centre of the earth, finding his way there via a volcano.
Inspired by the manuscript, The Professor is determined to follow in the explorer’s footsteps and builds a crew of men which includes his nervous nephew Axel. Together they begin their journey to the centre of the earth, facing fearsome danger and adventure at every turn.
The year is 1866 and the Pacific Ocean is being terrorized by a deadly sea monster. The U.S. government dispatches marine life expert Professor Aronnax on an extended voyage to investigate this new threat. He discovers not a monster, but a marvelous submarine vessel piloted by a deadly captain with a secret agenda.
Heralded as the father of modern science fiction, Jules Verne demonstrates his powers of predictive intuition in this classic underwater adventure.
Professor Aronnax, his faithful servant, Conseil, and the Canadian harpooner, Ned Land, begin an extremely hazardous voyage to rid the seas of a little-known and terrifying sea monster. However, the monster turns out to be the Nautilus, a giant submarine commanded by the mysterious Captain Nemo, by whom they are soon held captive.
So begins not only one of the great adventure classics but also a truly fantastic voyage from the lost city of Atlantis to the South Pole.
