A unique tool for teaching and learning the top 100 most teachable topics in internal medicine

There are many challenges for residents when training students who are making the big "jump" from preclinical to clinical. Most notably, they need to find time to pick and prepare topics to teach in meaningful ways without the availability of a blackboard in the learning hospital. Students also need to quickly be able to grasp these concepts quickly and with the ability to recall them later. This teaching manual primarily focuses on physiology/pathophysiology/exam findings with the goal of providing content to make teaching and learning on the wards easier for both attendings/senior residents and interns/medical students. It features the 100 most teachable topics (clinical pearls) in an image-based presentation and will cover all the major disciplines of internal medicine, including cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrine, and infectious disease.

Each topic, or card, has an image on one side to prompt discussion (ECG, CXR, physical exam finding, etc.), and the flip side includes teaching points organized in question and answer format. They are presented in a pocket-sized binder with removable cards so both residents and students can remove only the topics of the day or ones they need to study.

  • Each topic area has been reviewed by a specialist at Harvard Medical School.
  • Visual, easy-to-use and reference tool for on-the-go
  • Discusses the "why" behind a teachable topic
  • Q&A format serves both rotation and exam prep
  • Case-based to practice clinical pearls and complex topics

It is an important contemporary clinical emergency care resource for physicians, NPs, and PAs who practice emergency medicine and for emergency medicine and pediatric emergency medicine fellows. It remains the preferred study guide for in-training and board examinations and recertification.

NEW to this edition:
• Full-color design with more tables than ever to succinctly present key information
• Extensive updates to all sections, incorporating the latest guidelines, evidence-based protocols, and relevant research
• Expanded pediatric section, with complete clinical information for general and pediatric emergency physicians
• Expanded coverage of common emergency department procedures, with improved illustrations
• Online access to more than 30 videos, covering a wide range of procedural and diagnostic topics and focusing on the latest ultrasound-guided techniques

From the reviews of the seventh edition:
"Collectively, they have once again produced an excellent text that manages to cover the broad scope of emergency medicine while remaining an easily readable and practical resource....Last, for the inevitable comparison of this current edition of Tintinalli's Emergency Medicine with other available emergency medicine textbooks available: in my opinion, Tintinalli’s still comes out on top. It is more concise and easier to read than some, yet it covers the breadth of emergency medicine practice more comprehensively than others....Just as previous editions did, the seventh presents all of the most pertinent and up-to-date information in a well-organized format that is comprehensive yet easy to read. That and many of the attractive new features in this current edition will ensure its place on my bookshelf for years to come."—JAMA

Macleod’s Clinical Diagnosis demonstrates how to apply the core clinical skills learned from the companion textbook Macleod’s Clinical Examination to maximum advantage. Charting the course from routine work-up to diagnosis, this book presents a modern and realistic approach to clinical assessment and explains how to integrate information obtained from the history, examination, bedside tests and specialised investigations.

  • The first section Principles of clinical assessment examines different approaches to diagnosis, reviews the fundamental elements necessary for accurate patient assessment, provides a helpful template for a ‘routine workup’ and describes how to adapt the assessment to fit the clinical context.

  • The second core section of the book Assessment of common presenting problems contains a series of ‘diagnostic guides’ that lead the reader, step-by-step through the major presenting problems in medicine and surgery, explaining how to recognise red flag features, eliminate life-threatening conditons and generate a logical differential diagnosis.

This book has been praised as an invaluable resource for senior medical students and junior doctors as they attempt to make the difficult transition from mastering basic clinical skills to assessing patients in the real world of clinical medicine.

  • A unique book allowing a reader to apply the skills of clinical examination in the formulation of a differential diagnosis and placing a patient’s symptoms in context.
  • Takes a problem-based approach to diagnostic reasoning, reflecting both modern medical and current educational practices.
  • Builds on the clinical skills outlined in the companion Macleod’s Clinical Examination textbook.

For this Second Edition the text has been expanded with five new topics covering nausea and vomiting; vaginal bleeding; red eye; urinary incontinence; and weight loss.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER

The New York Times bestselling author of Being Mortal and Complications examines, in riveting accounts of medical failure and triumph, how success is achieved in a complex and risk-filled profession

The struggle to perform well is universal: each one of us faces fatigue, limited resources, and imperfect abilities in whatever we do. But nowhere is this drive to do better more important than in medicine, where lives are on the line with every decision. In this book, Atul Gawande explores how doctors strive to close the gap between best intentions and best performance in the face of obstacles that sometimes seem insurmountable.

Gawande's gripping stories of diligence, ingenuity, and what it means to do right by people take us to battlefield surgical tents in Iraq, to labor and delivery rooms in Boston, to a polio outbreak in India, and to malpractice courtrooms around the country. He discusses the ethical dilemmas of doctors' participation in lethal injections, examines the influence of money on modern medicine, and recounts the astoundingly contentious history of hand washing. And as in all his writing, Gawande gives us an inside look at his own life as a practicing surgeon, offering a searingly honest firsthand account of work in a field where mistakes are both unavoidable and unthinkable.

At once unflinching and compassionate, Better is an exhilarating journey narrated by "arguably the best nonfiction doctor-writer around" (Salon). Gawande's investigation into medical professionals and how they progress from merely good to great provides rare insight into the elements of success, illuminating every area of human endeavor.
