Every emotion of the heart is reflected in the Psalms with words that express our deepest and strongest feelings. They provide comfort and joy, leading us to the place where worship flows. This poetry on fire is divided into five books, mirroring the five books of Moses that form the first books of the Old Testament. Together they convey the depth of our longing and fears, joys and celebration, becoming a mirror to the heart of God’s people in our quest to experience God’s presence.

Book Two is known as the “Exodus Psalms.” Like the ancient Hebrew book itself, which chronicles Israel’s deliverance out of oppression, these psalms lament our suffering and long for similar redemption. Many poems are cries to God for help; they ask him to wake up and do something about our trials and trouble! Others wonder if God has forgotten his people in the midst of their pain and problems. Still other psalms cry for revival and renewal, praying from a place of weariness and ache. Then there are the poems that praise God for his faithfulness, protection, and grace—leading to faith and trust.

We’ve designed this study to help you explore these praises and prayers placed inside poems that spill out of a fiery, passionate heart. May this study of poetry on fire free you to become a passionate, sincere worshipper, and experience the heart of God anew in faith and worship.

Book Three of Psalms, called the “Leviticus Psalms,” is similar to the others in that it’s an anthology of poems, worshipping and petitioning the Lord. These, however, pivot around the themes of praise and God’s house, and God’s glory and grandeur. Some proclaim the glory of God’s holy house, emphasizing how life-giving and joyful it is to celebrate the Lord there. Others exalt the name of the Lord, praising him for his justice, awe-inspiring power, wonderful works, mercy, and truth. Still others appeal to this God of justice and mercy for help overcoming injustice, comfort during distress, and rescue from trouble.

The “Deuteronomy Psalms,” Book Five of the Hebrew poems, is the capstone to the poetry on fire. Beginning with extolling God’s constant love and encouraging his people to declare God’s goodness to the nations, these ancient poems celebrate God’s Word and emphasize his praise. This book is anchored by the longest of the poems, Psalm 119. It draws our attention to the Word of God, celebrating it and lifting it high for all to follow. This collection also encourages everyone everywhere to shine with praise for God’s goodness and mighty deeds. And even when they petition the Lord for help, worship is a breath away.

The “Numbers Psalms” is Book Four in this anthology of Hebrew poetry. It is composed of a series of praises and prayers for our pilgrimage on earth, giving voice to the highs and lows of our life-journey and drawing our attention to the sovereign Lord who reigns over it all. Throughout this collection, psalmists remind us of our Eternal God who is our safe and secure shelter, enthroned as God Most High. In response, we’re called to praise his rule and celebrate his compassion. We’re also invited to pray for help, knowing that he will listen and act because of his past faithfulness.

"So what?" That's the response many people have to the Bible. Read a passage, interpret it, and still they ask, "So, what difference does that make in my life?"

In the Life Essentials Study Bible, renowned Bible teacher Gene Getz complements the full text of the popular HCSB translation by elaborating on 1,500 principles in Scripture that are as relevant today as when the sixty- six books of the Bible were written. Distilling these truths into principles, Getz helps the reader more easily remember and effectively apply the Bible's wisdom to everyday life. He explains how each of these principles represents a supracultural truth - one that can and should be applied at any moment in history and in every cultural situation.

In addition, the Life Essentials Study Bible was created with an integrated digital study system--more than 250 hours of free online coaching content led by Getz--that fosters a greater understanding of the Bible's grand story.

Along the way, Getz adds pertinent questions in print to inspire personal reflection or group discussion of each principle. There's also an introduction to each book of the Bible and its list of corresponding principles, plus a topical index and cross references for all 1,500 principles. Other features of this dynamic study Bible - available in six different editions - include a two-piece gift box (leather editions only) as well as a presentation page.

"Owning a copy of this astounding project containing the prodigious work and wisdom of my friend and mentor Gene Getz will be like having him in the next room -- available to advise me on every passage. Being able to access his video teaching on each of the 1,500 ‘Principles to Live By’ is a breakthrough approach, making this truly the first multi-media study Bible. What a treasure! I know it will inform my own writing."
