Helene Cooper is “Congo,” a descendant of two Liberian dynasties—traced back to the first ship of freemen that set sail from New York in 1820 to found Monrovia. Helene grew up at Sugar Beach, a twenty-two-room mansion by the sea. Her childhood was filled with servants, flashy cars, a villa in Spain, and a farmhouse up-country. It was also an African childhood, filled with knock foot games and hot pepper soup, heartmen and neegee. The largest amphibious invasion force ever to cross the Atlantic Ocean set sail from Virginia for North Africa in November 1942. Operation Torch was the true beginning of the liberation of Europe since control of Northwestern Africa — Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia -- gave the Allies a base on the Mediterranean for the coming invasion of southern Europe. The prime objectives of the Moroccan invasion, headed by General George Patton, were the port city of Casablanca and an airfield 60 miles northeast of the city, which had the only concrete runways in the region. Unfortunately, the field was located a dozen miles up a shallow, twisting Moroccan river that wound its way down from the Atlas Mountains to the Atlantic. Patton needed five hundred tons of highly volatile airplane fuel and nine hundred tons of bombs delivered to that Moroccan airport to supply his planned air campaign against Casablanca, but he faced a major challenge: the river was too shallow for any available transport ship in the entire Allied fleet. Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast) was the first colony in sub-Saharan Africa to secure political independence from Britain. The book follows eight extraordinary Nigerian women in the December phase of their lives as they try to preserve the meanings of their endangered sign, symbol, and motif system called Uli (oo-lee). Uli is an acknowledgement of their Igbo history, culture and ancestors. Sanders agrees with others scholars who posit that non-text, non-oral forms of communication expressions such as Nigeria's Uli, and other sign and symbol systems throughout the world, particularly in Africa, are just as important or "viable" as the written word and their meanings should be respected and preserved. Endangered cultural practices, like Uli, are just as important to protect as endangered languages as a symbolic relationship exists between the two.
McDonnell argues that these well-designed campaigns are undergoing “cultural entropy”: the process through which the intended meanings and uses of cultural objects fracture into alternative meanings, new practices, failed interactions, and blatant disregard. The oppressed and secessionist ethnic group, the Igbos, had the wherewithal to defeat the federal forces within three weeks, but they were internally defeated by a culture of segregation. The culturally segregated class secretly allied with the federal forces to crush the secessionist region- Biafra. The author lays down, in describing the modue operandi of the segregated class- (saboteurs), his nerve-racking experiences in the battlefiled where bonafide Biafran soldiers were hunted by their fellow comrades. Unfortunately, they did not know that they were being hunted by those they had no reason to fear. Some lucky and sincere Biafran soldiers came to know what was happening when the war was virtually over. But many did not survive the acts of sabotage. They perished in the hands of their fellow comrades. The author prescribes manifest nullification of all forms of overt and covert cultural segregation in Igbo culture for the ethnic survival.
On the whole, the book demonstrates a convergence of conflict sociology, cultural anthropology, plotical history, military science, ethos of mysticism, spiritualism, and mystic philosophy in an amazing story.
