Experimental studies have led to a greater understanding of the mechanism of atrial fibrillation and potential precipitating factors in the cardiac surgical patient. Prophylactic efforts with beta-blockers, antiarrhythmic drugs and atrial pacing are being used, or are being investigated in clinical trials. New methods of achieving prompt cardioversion with minimal disruption of patient care, and prevention of the thromboembolic complications of atrial fibrillation, are also important therapeutic initiatives. This text is designed to aid health care professionals in the treatment of their patients in the recovery period after cardiac surgery, and to instigate additional research efforts to limit the occurrence of, and the complications following, this tenacious postoperative arrhythmia.

In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Kilmer S. McCully explains what is really behind the epidemic of heart disease. For many years, clogged arteries have been inaccurately viewed as the cause, rather than a symptom, of heart disease. Now, McCully shows you how to cut your risk of heart disease by controlling the real culprit, homocysteine. Considered one of the most significant medical breakthroughs in recent years, McCully's findings have been validated by numerous large-scale studies. The Heart Revolution:
Challenges the long-held assumption that lowering cholesterol is the key to preventing heart disease
Explains how eating vitamin B-rich food can control homocysteine levels
Lays out a plan with menus for putting more B vitamins in our diet
Discusses how food processing and additives compromise our health
Explains how costly cholesterol-lowering medicines can actually harm our health
Eat Your Way to a Healthy Heart
Pork Chops with Potatoes and Onions, Veal with Wine and Mushrooms, Guacamole, Omelettes. This is not your typical diet program. Dr. McCully offers real food choices with fresh ingredients available just about everywhere. The focus is on delicious foods that will leave you satisfied. The purpose is to make sure you're getting enough of the vitamins needed to prevent heart disease—B6, B12, and folic acid, as well as essential, phytochemicals, fat-soluble vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and essential oils. It's easy to follow this plan as it relies on foods you want to eat with little preparation time and tons of variety.

This year alone more than 1 million men and women in this country will suffer a heart attack or stroke. The shocking fact is that the majority of heart attacks and strokes can be prevented with the medical knowledge we already possess. Yet this isn't happening. Why? Because doctors and hospitals are paid more to treat disease with invasive techniques like angioplasty and bypass surgery than to prevent it. In his most personal and passionate work yet, Dr. Arthur Agatston champions a revolution in heart disease prevention that will enable people to stay out of the hospital and off the operating table.
In Part 1 of this compelling book, he tells you why seemingly healthy people can suddenly have a heart attack and why people with great cholesterol numbers can be walking time bombs. He explains why belly fat can be an early warning sign of future heart disease and why a noninvasive heart scan can help predict your risk of heart attack. In Part 2, he presents the South Beach Heart Program, his 4-step plan for detecting, preventing, and even reversing heart disease: The 4 steps include: Heart-healthy eating, regular aerobic and core-strengthening exercise, state-of-the art diagnostic testing, and the latest heart-protective medications, as necessary. Thanks to his aggressive prevention approach, Dr. Agatston rarely sees a heart attack or stroke in his practice. Now you can benefit from the prevention strategy he uses to help his patients every day.

Transradial Access: Techniques for Diagnostic Angiography and Percutaneous Intervention offers
a single source for both novice and experienced interventional
cardiologists for safely and effectively performing transradial
catheterization procedures. First described in 1989, the transradial
approach for coronary angiography and percutaneous interventions has
seen a constant and progressive increase around the world as a result of
significantly reduced procedural complications, shorter hospital stays,
increased patient satisfaction, and lower associated costs compared
with the transfemoral approach.
Yet despite its apparent benefits,
adoption of this technique in the United States has been slow, largely
due to the increased technical aspects of entering a smaller artery,
accessing the central circulation and engaging the coronary arteries
from this approach. In addition, until recently the technique was not
routinely taught in the majority of training programs. This book
flattens that learning curve by highlighting the technical aspects of
transradial diagnostic and interventional procedures, and includes
detailed discussion of:
are demonstrated in detail using both still images and video. Whether
you are an experienced transfemoral operator who wants to refine and
expand your technique or a new transradial operator looking to master
the technique, this comprehensive text holds the key to mastering this

Builds on the basic knowledge outlined in the classic ECG Made Easy
Emphasises the individuality of every ECG and uses full 12-lead ECG recordings to provide a realistic reproduction of the clinical environment.
The unique page size allows presentation of all 12-lead ECGs across a single page for clarity.
Each chapter begins with a brief account of the relevant history and examination and ends with a short account of what might be done once the ECG has been interpreted.
Now integrated throughout the book is text on electrophysiology and electrical devices. With pacemakers and implanted defibrillators now common among patients on general medical take, this material guides the reader in recognising their purpose and making a preliminary analysis of any malfunction.
Several pathophysiologic mechanisms have been postulated to explain the relationship between renal dysfunction and cardiovascular disease. Recent studies indicate an integrated response of the vascular smooth muscles and glomerular mesangial cells to traditional and uremia related cardiovascular risk factors. Traditional risk factors can incite renal impairment and cardiac damage. As renal function deteriorates, uremia-related risk factors play an increasing role both in reduction in glomerular filtration rate and cardiovascular damage. Several uremia related factors such as uncontrolled hypertension, disturbed glucose insulin metabolism, microalbuminuria, phosphate retention, secondary hyperparathyroidism, myocardial and vascular calcification, hypertensive-uremic cardiomyopathy, inflammation, oxidant injury, and neurohormonal dysregulation have been implicated in the pathogenesis of the cardiorenal syndrome. Recent data suggest that management of the cardiorenal syndrome requires aggressive control of traditional risk factors as well novel approaches to prevent or reverse uremia –related processes.
This book provides a comprehensive update analysis of our current understanding of the cardiorenal syndrome including epidemiology, pathophysiologic mechanisms, and therapeutic approaches.
