Because Bounds so diligently practiced what he preached, he was able to capture the essence of prayer and his works live on to call today's Christians to higher discipleship and more energetic prayer lives.
Bounds' simple, concise volume can help all Christians rediscover the source of spiritual power in their life.
In this wonderful classic book about prayer, author Edward M Bounds, clearly identifies those throughout the Bible who knew the importance of praying to God.
From Joshua and Jacob, and Samuel and Samson, to Daniel and David, and Peter and Paul, the sidnificance that prayer made in the lives of biblical men is unquestionable. Prayer is the difference between bictory and defeat- between communication with and isolation from God.
"Hezekiah had hardly finished his prayer, and Isaiah was just about to go home
when God gave him another message for Hezekiah,
this time one more pleasant and encouraging.
the mighty force of prayer had affected God,
and had changed His edict and reversed Him in His purpose concerning Hezekiah.
what is that which prayer cannot do?
what is it which a praying man cannot accomplish through prayer?"
Learn how you can be vitorious through praying such as those men in the Bible who overcame great odds to fulfill their destinies in God.
For many Christians, prayer is nothing special, just something we're supposed to do––go to church, tithe, read the Bible, pray. But prayer should be so much more than an item on our "to do" lists.
With this time–tested manual for powerful prayer by author E. M. Bounds, you will...
There are basics of prayer. When you understand them, your prayers will change you, your family, and the world.
Here are a few of the basics:The more praying there is in the world the better the world will be. Prayer is a disinfectant and a preventive. It purifies the air; it destroys the contagion of evil. Prayer is no fitful, short-lived thing. It is no voice crying unheard and unheeded in the silence. God shapes the world by prayer.
Author Edward M. Bounds, a prolific writer about prayer, focuses on the purpose in prayer rather than the purpose of prayer-and answers many questions you may have about how to improve your prayer time.
Why don't we pray more? "Other duties become pressing and absorbing and crowd out prayer. Choked to death, would be the coroner's verdict in many cases of dead praying, if an inquest could be secured on this dire, spiritual calamity."
Will you be the one to pray for the various interests of earth and Heaven?
Purpose in Prayer will awaken those who have neglected prayer, encourage those who desire help in this spiritual exercise, and give significant instruction to all who read its pages.
Of all the factors influencing our spiritual growth and development, pivotal books play a key role. Learning from those who have walked the path and fought the fight brings wisdom and strengthens resolve. And hearing the familiar chords of kingdom living sung by voices from other times can penetrate cultural barriers that limit our allegiance to the King. To this end, Moody Publishers is honored to present all nineteen books of its spiritual classics series. Selected for their enduring influence and timeless perspective, these new editions promise to shape the lives of spiritual pilgrims for generations to come.
Someone has said that prayer is not about overcoming God’s reluctance, but about laying hold of His willingness. This can also be said of healing ministry ~ it is not about overcoming God’s reluctance, but laying hold of His willingness to heal. God’s willingness is seen in His Word, where He has repeatedly revealed His desire to heal His people. The format of healing Scriptures and healing prayers is designed to help you lay hold of God’s willingness to heal you by laying hold of His Word and praying it back to Him in faith.
The Bible says that “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17). The Word of God reveals the will of God, and so enables us to pray effectively. “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him” (1 John 5:14-15). Healing is the will of God for His people, as these Scriptures show, so you can pray confidently, knowing that He hears you, and that you will receive your healing. In this book you will discover:
• God’s healing words in the Old Testament
• How healing is revealed in the names of God
• Choosing life
• God’s healing words in the New Testament
• The healing ministry of Jesus
• The healing ministry of the disciples
• Life restoration stories in the Bible
• How healing is revealed in the name of Jesus
• The Lord’s Prayer as healing prayer
• The Lord’s Supper as healing prayer
This is also a great tool to help you minister healing to others.
The New Testament apostles did. They prayed with passion and power ~ and turned their world upside down. We are not all called to be apostles, but we are called to be apostolic people and help establish the work of God in others by our prayers.
In this book, you will discover the principles that made them so effective in their prayer life: a heart perfected in love, a habit of devotion, a deep confidence in God and His Word, and a reliance upon the Holy Spirit. You will also learn how to pray the prayers they prayed ~ the apostolic prayers of the New Testament. These are powerful prayers because they express, not only the hearts of the apostles, but the heart of God:
• Ground-breaking evangelistic prayers that empower the work of the Gospel and prepare hearts to receive it
• Pastoral prayers that build up churches and establish Christians in the faith
• Benedictions that water God’s people with the blessings of heaven
• Prayers of thanksgiving that return praise to the “Lord of the Harvest” for what He is doing in His people
• Doxologies that praise God for who He is and declare His glory and goodness
Saint Augustine of Hippo (354–430) wrote:
In the Catholic Church, there are many other things which most justly keep me in her bosom. The consent of peoples and nations keeps me in the Church; so does her authority, inaugurated by miracles, nourished by hope, enlarged by love, established by age. The succession of priests keeps me, beginning from the very seat of the Apostle Peter, to whom the Lord, after His resurrection, gave it in charge to feed His sheep (Jn 21:15–19), down to the present episcopate.
And so, lastly, does the very name of Catholic, which, not without reason, amid so many heresies, the Church has thus retained; so that, though all heretics wish to be called Catholics, yet when a stranger asks where the Catholic Church meets, no heretic will venture to point to his own chapel or house.
Such then in number and importance are the precious ties belonging to the Christian name which keep a believer in the Catholic Church, as it is right they should ... With you, where there is none of these things to attract or keep me... No one shall move me from the faith which binds my mind with ties so many and so strong to the Christian religion... For my part, I should not believe the gospel except as moved by the authority of the Catholic Church.

Prayer is practical, Williamson tells us. "To look to God is to look to the realm of consciousness that can deliver us from the pain of living." Illuminata brings prayer into our daily lives, with prayers on topics from releasing anger to finding forgiveness, from finding great love to achieving intimacy. There are prayers for couples, for parents, and for children; prayers to mend broken relationships and prayers to overcome obsessive and compulsive love. There are prayers to heal the soul, prayers to heal the body, and prayers for work and creativity.
Williamson also gives us prayers for the healing of America, including two prayers that have had powerful effects on audiences at her lectures: a prayer of amends on behalf of European Americans to African-Americans and one to Native Americans. How, Williamson asks, can we expect anyone to forgive when we have made no formal apology?
Another section includes rites of passage, ceremonies of light for the signal events in our lives: blessing of the newborn, coming of age, marriage, and death. There is also a ceremony of the elder, for moving into midlife, and a ceremony of divorce, in which a gentle transition is provided for both the couple and their children.
"Read my prayers or someone else's," Williamson says. "By all means, create your own." Illuminata is a way to bring prayer into practical use, creating a sweeter, more abundant life for yourself and the people you care for. "No conventional therapy," she says, "can release us from a deep and abiding psychic pain. Through prayer we find what we cannot find elsewhere: a peace that is not of this world."
By dividing one hour into twelve five-minute "points of focus," such as praise, waiting, confession, and Scripture praying, believers will develop a more consistent habit of daily prayer. The Hour That Changes the World draws heavily on Scripture and classic devotional writers and includes an appendix titled "Scriptural Intercession."
This 25th anniversary edition features a new introduction by Eastman and a new foreword by Joni Eareckson Tada, in which she writes: "The Hour That Changes the World may appear small and modest, but don't let its size fool you. Full of biblical insights about prayer, packed with testimonies of prayer warriors from years past, brimming with practical suggestions that will help you carve out a purposeful time of praise and intercession, Dick Eastman's book is arguably the most significant book on prayer written in modern times."
