Drawing from philosophy, critical theory and musicology, as well as Dilla's own musical catalogue, Jordan Ferguson shows that the contradictory, irascible and confrontational music found on Donuts is as much a result of an artist's declining health as it is an example of what scholars call "late style,†? placing the album in a musical tradition that stretches back centuries.
At once among the most widely beloved and most reviled and lampooned pop stars of the past few decades, Céline Dion's critics call her mawkish and overblown while millions of fans around the world adore her "huge pipes†? and even bigger feelings. How can anyone say which side is right?
This new, expanded edition goes even further, calling on thirteen prominent writers and musicians to respond to themes ranging from sentiment and kitsch to cultural capital and musical snobbery. The original text is followed by lively arguments and stories from Nick Hornby, Krist Novoselic, Ann Powers, Mary Gaitskill, James Franco, Sheila Heti and others.
In a new afterword, Carl Wilson examines recent cultural changes in love and hate, including the impact of technology and social media on how taste works (or doesn't) in the 21st century.
Any chord progression can be seen as a combination of tonic, dominant and subdominant chords.
We employ 12 frequently used combinations which we call the core progressions. The first chapter demonstrates the core progressions in their simplest form using three major chords. Chapters 2-7 show which chords can be used as substitutes for the three majors to widen the range of expressive possibilities. This is similar to the way a painter uses a wider palette of colours beyond the primary colours of red, yellow and blue to achieve visual effects. Chapters 8 and 9 are about cyclic progressions and Chapter 10 details how to change keys.
Each chapter starts with a theory section followed by a song examples section which shows how the core progressions are used in the context of many popular songs. You can follow up what you have learned by working through the composition exercises for each chapter. There is also a revision section for each chapter to enable the reader to review the learning material.
There are two indexes, one for the song examples and one for the composition exercises. By using the links between these indexes and the contents page you can navigate the document to find what interests you. This will help you to develop a personalised approach to the learning material.
There are four additional learning modules on blues progressions, song forms, the AABA format and its many variations, and 36 chord theory which shows how any chord will function in any key.
The Secret Life of Chords is completely different to any other book on the market and is an invaluable resource for musicians of all levels.
These drills correlate with Lesson Book 1A and the review section of Lesson Book 1B.
These drills correlate with Lesson Book 1B.
These drills are great for teaching students musical concepts and essential for developing great musical skills.

This ground-breaking book sets out to explore The Beatles' songwriting techniques in a clear and readable style. It is aimed not only at musicians but anyone who has ever enjoyed the work of one of the most productive and successful songwriting parterships of the 20th Century.
Author Dominic Pedler explores the chord sequences, melodies, harmonies, rhythms and structures of The Beatles' self-penned songs, while challenging readers to enhance their appreciation of the lyrics themselves with reference to the musical context.
Throughout the book the printed music and lyrics of The Beatles' songs appear alongside the text, illustrating the author's explanations.
The Songwriting Secrets Of The Beatles is an essential addition to Beatles literature - a new and perceptive analysis of both the music and the lyrics written and performed by what Paul McCartney still calls 'a really good, tight little band'.
Like no record before or since, Gentlemen is fraught with the psychological warfare, bedroom drama, Catholic guilt, reprehensible deception and uncleansable shame that coincide with relationships gone seriously wrong. This story explores what happens when intellectual sophistication is star-crossed with outspoken braggadocio, a charismatic mixture that managed to alienate the mainstream horde and arms-folded indie scenesters while, for good measure, incited outsider jealousy and condescending rumors advanced by the Fat Greg Dulli 'zine. In addition to dissecting the record's organization, arrangements and lyrics, as well as examining old articles, reviews and interviews, this book delves into the memories, experiences and influences of the Afghan Whigs, most notably those that drive Dulli, a polarizing frontman whose fierce pretentiousness, GQ appearance and gloves-off boisterousness concealed deep-rooted mental depression and chemical dependency.
Rameau's Traité de l'harmonie is divided into four books, the first of which presents the mathematical basis from which Rameau sought to derive his theories. Book Two may be considered the most important section of the Traité; in it Rameau generates his entire harmonic system from fundamental principles, explaining intervals, chords, and modes — everything, in fact, essential to musical composition in tonal style. Working from the principles developed in Books One and Two, Book Three treats the practical rules of composition, including such topics as harmonic modulation and chord progressions. Book Four concerns the practical art of accompaniment on harpsichord or organ, including the realization of a figured bass. Corrections added by Rameau in a supplement are included in the text, and all the musical examples have been reset in modern musical notation. In addition, two pages from a unique copy of the first issue of the first edition are given in facsimile. The translator's introduction discusses the history of the work, Rameau's mathematics, and his place in the history of music theory.
Modulation — the change from one key to another — is a subject of critical importance to performers and composers in their study of harmony. Reger wrote this concise guide to modulation while teaching composition at Leipzig Conservatory, and the work continues to provide valuable insights and instruction for musicians at all levels. This new edition features newly engraved musical examples.
Like all double albums, Songs in the Key of Life is imperfect but audacious. If its titular concern - life - doesn't exactly allow for rigid focus, it's still a fiercely inspired collection of songs and one of the definitive soul records of the 1970s. Stevie Wonder was unable to control the springs of his creativity during that decade. Upon turning 21 in 1971, he freed himself from the Motown contract he'd been saddled with as a child performer, renegotiated the terms, and unleashed hundreds of songs to tape. Over the next five years, Wonder would amass countless recordings and release his five greatest albums - as prolific a golden period as there has ever been in contemporary music. But Songs in the Key of Life is different from the four albums that preceded it; it's an overstuffed, overjoyed, maddeningly ambitious encapsulation of all the progress Stevie Wonder had made in that short space of time.
Zeth Lundy's book, in keeping with the album's themes, is structured as a life cycle. It's divided into the following sections: Birth; Innocence/Adolescence; Experience/Adulthood; Death; Rebirth. Within this framework, Zeth Lundy covers Stevie Wonder's excessive work habits and recording methodology, his reliance on synthesizers, the album's place in the gospel-inspired progression of 1970s R'n'B, and many other subjects.
Dusty Springfield headed south to Memphis to record a pop/soul classic;
The Kinks almost fell to pieces, and managed to make their best album while doing so;
Joy Division and their mad, brilliant producer created a debut record that still sounds painfully hip today;
James Brown mesmerized a sell-out crowd at the Apollo, in the midst of the Cuban Missile Crisis;
The Rolling Stones shacked up in the South of France and emerged with one of the best double-albums ever;
The Ramones distilled punk rock into its purest, most enduring essence...
33 1/3 Greatest Hits, Volume 1: it's like a compilation album, without the filler.
Before an artistic and commercial decline that resulted in a 20-year gap between Devo's last two studio records, Freedom of Choice made them curious, insurgent superstars, vindicated but ultimately betrayed by the birth of MTV. Their only platinum album represented the best of their unreplicable code: dead-serious tricksters, embracing conformity in order to destroy it with bullet-proof pop sensibility. Through first-hand accounts from the band and musical analysis set against an examination of new wave's emergence, the first-ever authorized book about Devo (with a foreword by Portlandia's Fred Armisen) explores the group's peak of success, when their hermetic seal cracked open to let in mainstream attention, a legion of new Devotees, and plenty of misunderstandings. "Freedom of Choice was the end of Devo innocence–it turned out to be the high point before the s***storm of a total cultural move to the right, the advent of AIDS, and the press starting to figure Devo out and think they had our number," says Casale. "It's where everything changes."
Over the course of several long conversations with Josh Davis (DJ Shadow), we learn about his early years in California, the friends and mentors who helped him along the way, his relationship with Mo'Wax and James Lavelle, and the genesis and creation of his widely acknowledged masterpiece, Endtroducing.

3-Shape Fretboard is for intermediate to advanced guitarists interested in learning how to work out guitar scales and arpeggios for themselves. Being able to create guitar scales and arpeggios yourself can give a better understanding, while knowing the logic behind them can make them more meaningful and therefore easier to learn.
The Major Scale: It all starts with the major scale, the basis of music. All other scales and arpeggios can be defined in comparison to this scale. The book reflects this in practical terms by categorising the major scale into three different fundamental shapes, which once understood, can be used as templates to figure out other guitar scales and arpeggios.
The CAGED System: This system can help to understand the larger CAGED guitar scale shapes in terms of their single octave components. For example, the five CAGED shapes for the major (or minor) pentatonic scales that each contain twelve notes, can be learned as only two shapes of five notes, which are joined end to end to give us the five full CAGED shapes.
>> Various 3-Note per string scales can be understood as the same combination of single octave component types.
>> See how basic major and minor chords are formed from within scales and look at triad and 7th chord based harmony.
>> Each scale and arpeggio type has a question, with the answer at the back of the book in guitar tablature.
>> 3-Shape Fretboard contains 600 fretboard diagrams.
>> Intervals are grouped together in the context of the scales they are intended for, which can provide a foundation for learning intervals individually on the fretboard.
Please Note: The eBook includes diagrams not suitable for smaller screens.
"A logical and thorough approach to understanding scales, intervals and arpeggios on the guitar. All related to the universal CAGED idea of fretboard layout. Plenty to study and apply to your playing." -- Hedley Timbs, BA(Mus), Grad.Dip. Teaching (New Zealand)"I think the 3 pattern approach is very interesting and well documented. There is lots of good material and I like the approach. Very well organised, complete and clear with plenty of diagrams." -- Fabien Aubry, Composer, Arranger & Producer (Switzerland)
