Many have written concerning fasting. Few have experienced extended fasts several times per year of from forty-eight hours per week and from twenty-one to forty days’ duration with such results as Dr. Fomum and believers in some of the Churches in Cameroon. “Each fasts according to his strength,” each fasts drinking water only.
The reader of The Ministry of Fasting is caught up in the reality of fasting unto the Lord on behalf of men leading tragic lives and nations facing tragic consequences of their sins or against the forces of evil in the world. As light is shed on the biblical teachings of The Ministry of Fasting, one is challenged with the evidence of the need to make an acceptable fast unto the Lord.
Along with Bible characters, the Church fathers from Savanarola, Martin Luther, Knox, Wesley, Jonathan Edwards, and modern Church leaders, both living and dead, are cited as exemplary among those who valued fasting unto victory in Christ.
Dr. Fomum explores the aspects of fasting, interference of spirits, and the different reasons to fast: for deliverance, ministering unto the Lord, and mourning... He helps one with preparations for fasting, how to intercede while fasting, how to break a fast, what to do after a fast, and how to maintain the results of a fast.
The book is written, as the others of his books, in a teachable, expanded outline format. The earnest intercessor and serious spiritual warrior will want to read this book.
DR. LESTER SUMRALL
Firstly, soon after the Holy Spirit came upon me in power on 24th October 1970, the Lord showed me a vision of the lost in hell. Later on, He showed me a vision of the saints in heaven. Then He revealed to me how much He loved and loves me. This book is an attempt to respond to what He allowed me and is allowing me to see.
Secondly, the angel said to the wife of Manoah, the father of Samson, “You will conceive and give birth to a son. No razor may be used on his head, because the boy is to be a Nazirite, set apart to God from birth, and he will begin the deliverance of Israel from the hands of the Philistines” (Judges 13 : 5). Manoah asked him, “When your words are fulfilled, what is to be the rule for the boy’s life and work?” (Judges 13 : 12). Enclosed here is the rule for my life and for my work as I have received it from the Lord and as I have worked it out with Him over the years. The Apostle Paul said, “For this reason I am sending to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of ‘my way of life in Christ Jesus’, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church” (1Corinthians 4 : 17). This book is a statement of my own ‘way of life in Christ Jesus’.
Thirdly, along the years, I have made vows to the Lord which have been included in this book. Having vowed to the Lord, I must keep my vows to Him (Ecclesiastes 5 : 4 – 6).
Fourthly, I have walked with the Lord Jesus for many years. He has blessed and satisfied me beyond measure. In response to His love, I give Him my spirit, my soul and my body with joy, and I have found it an undeserved privilege to serve Him. I beg to serve Him. I beg to give Him my all. I beg with joy for the undeserved privilege of knowing, loving and serving Him.
The truths charted in this book are coloured by what that local assembly has learnt as it tried, step by step, to follow the praying Lord in the School of Prayer. We have a commitment to prayer, fasting, and evangelism. We are learning and we are growing. Pray for us. Pray with us.
We have come to discover that all things are possible to the praying saint and to the praying body of believers. By God’s grace, we are determined to wipe out the word “impossible” from the life experience of the members of the assembly.
Our hearts’ desire is that all those who know the Lord Jesus will truly become people of prayer. So we send this book out with prayer that it will help some individuals and some local assemblies to make progress with the Lord in the “School of Prayer”.
To the Lord Jesus, the praying, supplicating and interceding Head of the Church be untold honour, glory, and majesty forever and ever.
Someone may not be able to find time to pray for one hour in a stretch in the morning, afternoon or evening. For others if they found time, they might not know how to use it. Each of these groups of people can use the suggested programme for fifteen minute retreats that are in the following pages and find their prayer life transformed.
By having four fifteen minute retreats a day, one has actually spent one hour before God. Many people will find that they accomplish far more in four retreats of fifteen minutes than in one retreat of one hour. The advantage of fifteen minute retreats is that even people who cannot concentrate for long periods are able to concentrate for fifteen minutes and thereby pray effectively. Also, the retreat is over before the person is bored. The person thus looks forward to the next retreat. There is the additional advantage that most believers have enough to talk to the Lord about in fifteen minutes. This solves the problem of people who are confused about what to say to God for a long period of time. Then, even the busiest people have time for this retreat, and children too.
It is hoped that the fifteen minute retreats will help the one who retreats to enjoy the Lord so much that he will find that the fifteen minute period is insufficient for his communion with the Lord and therefore he must go on longer retreats. This is good. It is excellent.
The second book in this series is entitled: "Enjoying the Choice of Your Marriage Partner," while the third book in this series is entitled: "Enjoying the Married Life."
Book one continues in book two and book three brings the theme to a climax. To have a balanced and complete view of what God has given us on the subject, we encourage you to read books two and three as well.
We send this book out with faith that you will soon discover that it is the book for you, your parents, your children, your friends, and all whom you know, and that you will do all you can to put it within their reach.
If you have been blessed, encouraged, challenged, provoked, or made angry by the contents of this book, please write to me about how you feel.
God bless you!

You might have started as a disciple of the Lord Jesus. That was a good beginning. However, I ask, “Are you still a disciple of the Lord Jesus?” Let the testimonies and message in this book help you to situate yourself and, by the grace of God, return to being a disciple of the Lord Jesus, if you have backslidden. Let this book help you to become a disciple of the Lord Jesus, if you have never become one. Even if you think that all is going well with you, read the book in order to help others who may be in need.
May the Holy Spirit, the Revealer of the Lord Jesus Christ, draw close to you and help you to see things clearly as you read and to act on this message!
With every blessing in our Lord’s wonderful name.
An intercessor then ... takes the sin of another upon himself... He pleads and labours with God until the guilty party is forgiven.
Pointing to a great shortage of intercessors, the question is asked, “Does it matter to you?”
Biblical teaching on intercession is covered in both the Old and New Testaments. Perhaps the greatest need of the Church today is that we be intercessors. Dr. Fomum examines the art of intercession as practised by Moses, Abraham, Daniel, Nehemiah, Paul, Epaphras and Jesus Himself.
The challenge is disturbing as the reader realizes how short of the mark is even the most spiritual of Christians.
Dr. Fomum practises what he teaches, as do some Churches in Cameroon. Who of us prays for several hours each day? Who of us fasts and prays in spiritual warfare for from 21-40 days at a time, several times per year?
This book is MUST reading for the serious Christian.
Dr. Lester Sumrall
The Lord wants to fill His children with the Holy Spirit and with His power. He is waiting anxiously to do this. Although He is anxious to do this, He can only fill those who are empty. Those who are filled with sin, self, the love of the world or the love of the things that are in the world cannot be filled with the Holy Spirit, because they are already filled with the wrong thing or with the wrong things.
Below are seven heart conditions. The shaded part of the heart represents things in the heart that must be removed before the Lord can fill the heart. Some have more things standing in the way of their being filled with the Holy Spirit, while others have less. However, the Lord can only fill a heart to overflowing with the Holy Spirit when all that already fills the heart has been removed.
God’s purposes in the New Covenant are tied to people who are filled with the Holy Spirit. To be filled with the Holy Spirit, a person must remove every other thing that fills his heart and life. We have thought about the things that often fill the hearts of people and so hinder them from being filled with the Holy Spirit. Below is such a list. Study the list carefully, going from one item to another. If you find anything on the list in your life, you have found what separates you from being filled with the Holy Spirit. Acknowledge its presence in your life. Ask and receive from the Lord the power to hate its illegal presence in your life. Uproot it from your heart and throw it away. Carry out the necessary restitution and never allow it to come back into your heart and life.
After you have uprooted all that should not be in your life, you will have a pure heart (diagram 7). You may have to fast and pray so as to soften your heart, so that some things that resist departure from the heart should effectively be pushed out of your heart and life.
You may ask me how long it will take to remove all the things that are listed and which should not be in your heart. The answer is that it depends on you. It could take 584 minutes or 584 hours or 584 days or 584 months, depending on how willing your heart is to let go all the things that do not please the Lord. Yes, it will depend on how urgently you want to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Those who are in a hurry to be filled with the Holy Spirit will be in a hurry to remove the obstacles that stand between them and the Spirit-filled life. Such people will take no rest and give God no rest until the obstacles are removed.
Immediately you present a pure heart to God, He will fill it with the Holy Spirit. He is eagerly waiting to fill you. Empty yourself without delay.
However, the believer does not need to worry and despair. He should confront the Enemy. He should confront the Enemy, not from a position of fear, but from one of victory. We know from the Word that the One who is in us is greater than the one who is in the world. Leonard Ravenhill aptly expresses this when he says,
“When Satan fell he drew a third of the heavenly host with him. Therefore opposing the Christian are the world, the flesh, and the devil, plus one-third of what was the heavenly host. For the Christian are the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, two-thirds of the heavenly host, plus the prayers of many friends and the boundless promises of the unchangeable and indestructible Word of the living God. The balance of power is greatly on the side of the saint. May we so arise from our juvenile Christianity that, armed with the panoply of God and plundering the devil’s area, his satanic majesty will have to say, ”Jesus l know, Paul l know, and Christians today are scaring me by discovering a lost secret of the early church - prayer, faith and blood-covered boldness.”
Although the balance is on the side of the saint, the passive saint will soon discover that God will answer his prayers, but will not pray in his place. All saints must rise and wage war against the Enemy, and fight right into the kingdom of darkness. They must not only fight defensive warfare. They must attack the Enemy and, if possible, carry the warfare right into hell.
l have been under very severe attack from Satan in the course of writing this book. It has been as if all of hell would not let me write the book. l have come close to dying as l was labouring to finish the book. My wife and children have been under attack throughout. It is only due to the grace of God and the application of the things written in this book that we have been able to come to this point in the writing. As you read, take cover under the blood of the Lamb.
There are areas of spiritual warfare that have deliberately not been touched. The reason for this is either because they have been treated in our books, “Deliverance From Demons”, and “The Way of Spiritual Warfare”, or because they will be treated in the series, “The Overthrow of Principalities and Powers.”
We send this book out with prayer that God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be glad to use it to bless some of His children. To Him be all the honour and glory !
• be totally unrecognizable at the slightest provocation,
• be selfish and self-centred,
• love sin,
• hide or blame others for his mistakes and failures,
• get worried when faced with the least problem, and act before he has prayed about it,
This talks of an unbroken life in which, unfortunately, most believers who truly confess the name of the Lord, find themselves several years after conversion.
The purpose of God in the new creation is to produce people who attain spiritual maturity, by quickly attaining the stature of broken men and women. God does it through the cross, to break and destroy the natural man and, by the work of the Holy Spirit, to build the character of Christ in the believer. Brokenness therefore depends on the degree to which a person has allowed the cross and the Holy Spirit to work in him.
Taking Jacob’s life as a basis, the author shows how one can go from the state of the natural man (unconverted) to that of a carnal believer (unbroken), then to that of a spiritual believer (broken); that is, a life in which the believer
belongs totally to the Lord,
allows free access to God in the minutest details of his life,
no longer presents any obstacle to God.
Read this book. It will challenge you and help you to make progress on the pathway of brokenness, to such an extent that you will soon be able to confess with apostle Paul, “It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.”
Most of the world is lazy. Too many believers are idle. Few attain their God-given potential. The Kingdom suffers because of the too many spectators who are said to be soldiers in the army of the Lord.
The loss to God, to the Kingdom of God, and to the lazy person that is caused by the sin of laziness, is beyond measure. Must things continue that way? I do not think so.
Laziness is a deadly sin.
The one who commits this sin can be delivered.
That is what this book is about.
May the Lord bless you as you read it! Amen.

Zacharias TANEE FOMUM
We can see in this passage, which portrays God’s original thought about marriage, that the following were fundamental for a successful marriage:
Adam created by God and living in fellowship with God.
Adam given a specific task to do by God.
A suitable helper needed to help Adam to be all that Godwanted him to be, (particularly in accomplishing the God-given task of working up the garden and taking care of it).
Eve created to be that suitable helper.
Adam fulfilled in having Eve as his helper.
Because this is the divine model, a marriage will succeed as it labours and becomes what God had in mind from the beginning. A wife will make her marriage succeed as she labours and becomes the helper suitable for her husband.
In this book, we shall study what is involved in becoming and being a suitable helper, for as a wife becomes and continues as a suitable helper for her husband, she would have brought in her full contribution to make their marriage successful.
I very much needed the contribution of someone of the opposite sex to enable this small book to make more sense. I needed a woman to say something to women that would help them to bring in their full contribution to making their marriages successful. It is for this reason that chapters 8 and 9 were written by a godly woman - Esther Kouonang.
Many marriages are failing in our day. Even some marriages of true believers are broken or in bad shape. We know that this must grieve our heavenly Father’s heart. We also know that a successful marriage pleases His heart and bears strong testimony to the power of Christ to save and transform.
Because our burden is that the largest number of lost people all over the world should be radically converted to the Lord Jesus and transformed into His likeness in the shortest possible time, we send out this small book with much prayer that it should be used by the Holy Spirit to transform some broken and breaking marriages into marriages that are successful, and that it should transform all happy marriages into successful marriages for the glory of the Lord and the advance of the Gospel.
The next book in the series is going to be, “A Successful Marriage: The Children’s Responsibility.”
I knew a missionary. He was a dear man of God and full of zeal. He preached everywhere for about nine years in a certain denomination. When he was forced by circumstances to return to his country, he left no team behind to continue his work. The evangelistic team that he had started "died" with his departure. Had he been successful ?
I know another missionary who was also keen on winning souls. He started an evangelistic centre. The Lord began to bless it. I even preached once in that centre. There were at least 300 people there that night. Forty-six people came forward to make a commitment to Christ. Then he left. Six months after he had left, the attendance dropped to 50, and within one year that centre was closed. It has not been reopened for five years. Was he successful?
I was the evangelist in an evangelistic campaign in our centre. The Lord moved that night. About 80 people came forward to receive the Lord. I asked the counsellors to come forward and counsel these people into the Kingdom of God. Twenty people came up quickly. Then another ten came up reluctantly. Then I was left on the stage with about 50 people with no more counsellors coming forward. There were at least 1000 believers in the assembly and at least 800 of them were present that night. The 80 deacons and deaconesses in the assembly had each counselled a number of people in the last four weeks and their hands were full with young converts. They did not feel that they should come and counsel some more, since that would mean that they could not give all of them individual attention. Why did none of the other 720 believers who were present come up? When I finally spoke sternly, some more of the deacons and deaconesses came up joylessly. It was a bad evening even though God had moved. Had I been successful in building up the assembly ? God had used me to get it started, but what had I done ? I had filled it with babies. Many had their heads filled with good teaching, but I had failed to teach them to make disciples. Sure enough, many were mature and others were maturing in the Christian Way. However, I had failed, not only to teach them to be disciples, but also to make disciples. The Lord had commanded me to make disciples who would make disciples. I was to teach disciples to mature and make other disciples. I was to encourage disciple-makers to become makers of disciple-makers. I had been unfaithful in making disciple-makers. I had failed the Lord.
This book is an attempt to meet the need of the call of the Lord to make disciples who will make disciples, who will make disciples, etc.
We pray that as you read these messages, you may be blessed in your walk with the Lord.

Une période de quinze minutes;
deux périodes de sept minutes et huit minutes;
trois périodes de cinq minutes;
cinq périodes de trois minutes;
Is manual work for inferior people?
Is manual work for failures?
For startling answers to these questions, we encourage you to read this book.
I have borrowed extensively from the thoughts of Watchman Nee in writing the message “The Cross and Our Priorities.”
I believe that the Cross is central in the life and ministry of the believer. My prayer for myself and for the Body of Christ is that we may each know the Cross experientially and then the Holy Spirit will have His way unhindered in our lives to the glory of the Lord.
May the Lord use these messages for the enriching of some in His Church.
In this book, «Basic Christian Leadership», Professor Fomum highlights the fact that Christian leadership is not primarily an issue of nomination or title, but a position attained and maintained before God in all areas of the Christian life.
The Christian leader is ahead of others in all things particularly in the area of Christ-likeness.
This book was written from notes taken during Professor Fomum’s teachings and covers subject maters such as:
The call to preach the Gospel,
Jesus, the only sure foundation for salvation,
Working towards the reward for a job well done
Fighting against “self” and putting on humility
The shepherd’s character, pastoral ministry and the different types of sheep
Inner power, etc.
Read this book and you will be blessed. Read it and you shall find solutions for most of your issues regarding spiritual leadership
The church is, generally speaking, powerless. The lives of many believers are a tragic contradiction of the gospel they talk about. In the face of diseases, demons, and the like, many believers stand totally powerless. There is a growing confidence in human skills, human techniques, human methods, and human organisations. On the whole, many live and act as if God were absent. This ought not to be so. This must not continue to be so.
In the life of the church and in the life of each believer, there must be power that cannot be accounted for on any grounds. People looking must be able to say, “This is God at work” and nothing else.
The power of the Lord is made available to all who come to Him. His power is manifested in full measure through channels that are fully opened to Him and that give Him the freedom to do His work His way, and in His time.
Although spiritual power can be manifested without holiness and obedience, those who are open to and co-operate with the Lord through prayer, the Word, holiness, a surrendered life, Christian character, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and so on, will begin to experience spiritual power, and as they continue to seek the Lord and His might, they will grow in the knowledge of Him and His might.
We send out this book with prayer that it should be used by the Lord to stir hunger after the Lord and the power of His might.
We believe, however, that there are some who truly hunger for the Lord and desperately want to come out of their backsliding and walk in close proximity with Him. It is for such people that this book has been written.
We pray that the Lord should cause this book to fall into the hands of those who need it and that He should revive such ones and bring them into His glory.
The Lord Jesus came to seek and to save the lost. He died on the cross for all sinners and thus shed His blood for all men. Everyone who believes in the Lord Jesus is saved from the consequence of his sin - eternal separation from God in hell. Everyone who does not believe in the Lord Jesus will go to hell.
The one reason why the Lord Jesus did not take you to heaven the day you believed was that you should stay on earth and be His partner in winning the lost.
In this book we have given you reasons why you must win the lost. May the Holy Spirit set your heart on fire as you read the book, so that you will take no rest but give yourself wholeheartedly to the supreme task of winning the lost.
I have been deeply moved by the quality and quantity of the Lord’s prayers. He just prayed. It is obvious from the way He prayed that He understood that everything depended on prayer.
I am convinced that the Lord Jesus understood the true value of prayer. That value was reflected by how much He prayed. I am also now more aware that through a special activity of the Enemy, the Church has been blinded from seeing prayer as the Father sees it and seeing prayer as the Son saw it. This blindness seems total in some quarters and is certainly partial in all others.
As a people of God in the city of Yaounde, our eyes are beginning to be opened to the importance of prayer. This has resulted in individual prayer crusades – prayer crusades of two, four, six people and prayer crusades of the House Churches. This has also resulted in the seven prayer chains that are scattered in this city where people are keeping prayer vigils round the clock – twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
We believe that this is only the beginning. Our eyes are only partially open because there is yet only limited burden that leads to heart-rending before God and heaven-storming in prayer. We plead with the Lord that He should open our eyes so that we might see more clearly the critical importance of prayer. We also pray that He should open our eyes to how late the hour is. We pray that He should teach us and enable us to pour out our all in prayer, to convert sleeping time into prayer time; to convert every available minute into prayer time. We pray also that He should enable us to handle the practical aspects of prayer to the best advantage; for a well-equipped but poorly organized army might yet suffer serious loss.
There are other things that ought to have been included in this book. We have thought it best to leave some of them for the subsequent books that, by God’s grace, will follow.
The substance of these messages was first given to leaders of House Churches in the city of Yaounde and around. At the time of delivery it was not intended that these messages would become a book, but the Lord has willed it to be so. As a companion volume to this book is the next book in this series, The Phenomenon of Prayer. Both series of messages were given at the same time. We would have liked to make both into one book, but there was a problem of size. If you have read this message and been blessed, you will want to read the next book in the series. You will also find that you need the material in the first four books to come to grips with the themes of prayer, fasting and intercession.
A book on prayer is not a novel. It cannot be read with ease or in one go. It has to be taken in small bites. I suggest that you should first read the book quickly through and then come back for a slower reading in which you take a bite at a time. I have established the habit of having a good book on prayer on the table or near the bed. I always carry one with me. As I read small portions from books like those by E.M. Bounds, I am stirred to pray. You too might find the habit beneficial. You may find that one of the books or some of the books in this series are a blessing to you.
The Lord was in the Ministry of Praying. He also taught His disciples how to pray. You and I should go and do likewise and we shall indeed be blessed and, above all, the Lord’s name shall be glorified.
Our prayer is that by God’s grace you will find in this book some thoughts that will revolutionise and stir your heart to pray and pray and pray.
May our God bless you exceedingly.
There are other people whose sicknesses are deeper than the physical dimension. They are crippled by fear, bitterness, jealousy and the like. Psychologists are doing the best that they can to provide answers for these people.
However, Jesus is God's Answer to all of man's of healing and health. He is the right answer for these people. He has provided in His death, resurrection and enthronement, all that man needs for total healing at all levels.
The believer is called to enter into all that the Lord Jesus has provided for his total healing. He must co-operate with the Lord Jesus in order to enter into all that the Lord has provided for him. Sometimes this co-operation will demand that he, too, like his Lord, take up his cross, follow his Lord and die on it - to his love of "self" in all its forms. Out of this death comes, not only perfect inner healing, but also perfect inner health in perpetuity.
May this book help some who are bound by fear, jealousy, bitterness, lovelessness and the like, to enter into the glorious liberty of the sons of God.

God ordained prayer primarily so that His needs be met. In the prayer that the Lord Jesus taught his disciples, the priority of prayer was to be His Name, His Kingdom, and His Will. «Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one» (Matthew 6:9-13). If the priority in prayer are His name; His kingdom and His will, then it is obvious that for anyone to pray to the satisfaction of God, that one must come before God and wait before God, so that God should give him revelations as to what the needs of His Name, His Kingdom and His Will are. Until these are revealed by God to man, man cannot pray rightly. After they are revealed to man, man can begin to pray what God would have him pray about. This makes waiting on the Lord in prayer a must; for without waiting on the Lord in prayer there is no other way by which these things can be known.
The other issue is that we do not know what our real needs are. We may think that we know what we need, but a closer look will betray our ignorance. Only God knows what our true needs are. Faced with the issues of choosing a wife or a career, we have to face the fact that although we may know what we need now, we do not know what we shall need five, ten, twenty or fifty years from today. God knows what we shall need all the years of our lives. If we wait on Him to reveal to us what we shall always need so that we can ask what will meet our short and long term needs, then we shall be the happier for it. This again makes waiting on the Lord in prayer a must.
The third thing we want to say is that unless people spend time together, they will not know each other much. Those who want to know the Lord must wait on Him in prayer, so that He may reveal Himself ever increasingly to them. The more a person waits on the Lord, the more the Lord will reveal Himself to that one; and the more revelations the person has from the Lord of His character, His will, His plans, His purposes, etc., the more the person will know the Lord. This again makes waiting on the Lord in prayer a must; for without such waiting, the believer will only have a superficial knowledge of Him.
We send this book out with prayer that the many believers who are being awakened to a life of praying, and are actually praying, learn to wait on the Lord in prayer and so pray more correctly. We send this book out with prayer that since it is a matter of Waiting On The Lord In Prayer, the saints should not just wait in prayer, but they should wait on the Lord in prayer. That is, they should wait and wait and keep waiting until the Lord has spoken or answered.
We are well aware of the fact that as in all aspects of spiritual science there is an initiation, a learning and a continuation as progress is made, those who do not yet wait on the Lord in prayer will enrol in the School Of Waiting On The Lord In Prayer, and make progress.
We commend you, dear reader, as we commend this book, to the Lord of glory with prayer that He be glad to use this book for your spiritual enrichment.
To Him be all the honour and glory!
It treats amongst others:
The veil which prevents the unbelievers from coming to the salvation of Jesus Christ.
The veil which prevents them from seeing the need of prayer.
The responsibility of the leader to tear this veil by fasting and prayer
The responsibility of the body of Christ and the body of elders
Prayer that originates from the heart of God.
These messages are not theological debates on these themes but are words from heart to hearts .Hence they are very practical, and treats subjects like handling of the prayer book, etc, In addition, the contributions from many field leaders make this book a real inner history of our work and enables us to experience the atmosphere that prevailed during the course.
We strongly recommend this book to the body of Christ entirely for the problems treated in it are similar and the proposed solutions are useful to all.
May the Lord bless you abundantly as you read this book
In this small book, we present what we see as the secret of Spiritual Fruitfulness. We send it out as coming, not from experts, but from learners in the School of Jesus. We pray that the Lord should speak to you through this message and help you to bear abundant fruit for His coming glory.
God has given each human being his talent or talents to help him to find his place in the universe, and to function readily. Discovering your talent, developing it and maximising its potential will enable you to live and function readily in the sphere of labour that God assigns to you. Leaving your talent aside and trying to acquire the talent of others and to do what they are doing or what they are supposed to do will lead to frustration. An ear cannot decide to function as an eye and succeed, neither can fishes decide to grow wings and succeed.
The person who starts with one or a limited number of talents and employs these faithfully to the glory of God and the blessing of man, can ask and receive more talents from the Lord for more service. The person who does not invest his talent for God’s glory and satisfaction will lose it to the one who is more faithful . Besides losing his talent, he will receive additional punishment for wasting God’s talent. Consequently, all who have received talents from God are accountable to Him for what they do with what they have received.
Most of the time, God allows a person to maintain his talent or talents after conversion to the Lord Jesus. Often, these are enhanced or increased in the act of conversion; so that people are capable of doing more, for the Lord Jesus after conversion, than they could do before. The talents of converted people and their spiritual gifts are to be used for the glory of God, the advancement of the Kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ and the service of man.
Because talents are God’s special abilities that He gives to man to use for Him, they best function in those who know radical conversion and radical consecration to Him. This is because the radically converted and radically consecrated know deep-seated deliverance from sin, self, bondage, the love of the world, the love of the things of the world and all else that will stand in the way of further development and use of the God-given talents. We therefore recommend radical conversion, radical sanctification and radical consecration as the normal way of life for all who want to make the best use of their God-given talent or talents.
You have a talent.
Seek to discover it.
Maximize its potential.
Invest it in the service of God, man and yourself, and you will be truly fulfilled.
God bless you exceedingly!
The Lord has wrought something in my life between 1990 and today, largely in the area of deliverance from sin, deliverance from self, deliverance from the love of the world, deliverance from the love of the things of the world, being filled with the Holy Spirit, and the knowledge of the Lord. I now feel that I can write the book, though with fear and trembling, and not from a position of perfection, but from the position of one who has received unmerited grace to write it.
The Lord is the believer’s all. He is the believer’s everything. He should be sought, found, known and loved. He should be made the believer’s bliss, and out of that knowledge of Him should flow service that satisfies His heart. God seeks lovers who, out of love, will serve Him, and not just servants who, out of duty, will do many things for Him.
In frequent withdrawals of short and long duration, the hungry soul can seek and find the Lord. This will allow for worship and service for Him. It will also provide for a spirituality in this world that satisfies His heart.
To those who are not too carried away with the superficialities of our generation, we offer this book with prayer that the Blessed Holy Spirit be glad to use it for the glory of the Lamb who even now is ministering from the throne in seclusion. To Him be honour and praise.
2. Enjoying the Choice of a Life Partner.
3. Enjoying the Married Life.
4. Divorce and Remarriage.
5. A Successful Marriage: The Husband’s Making
6. A Successful Marriage: The Wife’s Making
The husband is called upon to be the king, the prophet and the priest of his wife. The extent to which he fulfils these roles determines the quality of his marriage. As the head, the success of the marriage will be determined by him. Also, as the head, the failure of the marriage will reflect the extent to which he has failed. This means that the secret to a successful marriage is with the man.
God has commanded the man to love his wife as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her. The love with which Christ loves the church is a supernatural one - God’s love. No husband can love his wife naturally in a sustained way. Natural love does not last. If the husband is to love his wife as Christ loves the church, he must receive God’s supernatural love from the Holy Spirit and pour that love on his wife. Because the love of God poured out into the heart of man by the Holy Spirit is unceasingly available, it is possible for a man to receive that love and love his wife with God’s love unceasingly and increasingly. This will provide a solid foundation for a successful marriage.
The message in this book was first given to married couples in the church in Yaounde. It was then compiled from the notes taken and completed from the cassette recordings. The author added only slight touches to what was written from the spoken message.
The next book in this series is going to be, “A Successful Marriage: The Wife’s Making.”
We send this small book out with prayer that it be used by the Lord of the church to bring blessings to the unmarried, to those contemplating on marriage and to those who are married.
We also send it out with prayer that the Holy Spirit should use it to correct and bless many marriages, so that the Lord may be exalted in Christian couples and His purpose in marriage fulfilled.
If God has given people the same length of each passing day, then how do we account for the fact that some people seem to accomplish so much and others so little?
The difference comes in the way people use the twenty-four hours of each day that the Lord has given them. Some sleep for four hours and then carefully invest the remaining twenty hours on the priority issues of their lives, and thus make impact on the world. Others sleep for eight hours everyday, then spend another eight hours doing nothing, because they are plagued with indecision, and the last eight hours are invested in non-essentials. These two groups of people, with twenty-four hour days, are investing them differently and will, consequently, reap different products from their lives.
I had the privilege of being brought up by a father who knew the importance of time and, consequently, used it wisely. When I handed the master key of my life to the Lord Jesus on 1st October 1966, the Word of God came alive in me and the godly principles in which I had been brought up (including the use of time) came alive in me and the Lord has helped me to begin to learn how to use time. At the moment, I am investing an average of 16 hours a day into the service of the Lord and as a University teacher. My goal is that one day, I shall render 18 hours of full service to God and man. I am, consequently, only a student in the School of Using Time. Some of the principles shared with you in this book have been applied and are being applied in my life for profit. My prayer is that they should be a source of blessing to you.
In writing this book, I have endeavoured not just to give you some formulae or some techniques to apply in your life. Time is a gift from the Lord and its correct use cannot be separated from a deep and increasing knowledge of Him.
The extent to which this book helps you to draw near to the Lord, know Him and use time to accomplish His will, will be the extent to which I consider that writing it has served the Father's interest, and that, to me, is wonderful.
God bless you exceedingly!
making you as ineffective as possible.
using you as a spy to betray the Lord Jesus.
You cannot be neutral. By your every thought, word and deed, you are helping to advance one of the two sides in the conflict. With your every second, minute, hour and day, you are either working with God for the advancement of His army and Kingdom or helping the devil, His rival, to build his army and kingdom. You do well to choose rightly.
The Lord Jesus won the great victory over the devil and his host on the cross. We consider it a great privilege to proclaim that victory. We are compelled by the very nature of the truth to present Jesus as the Saviour, Teacher, Deliverer, Healer and Victor, even though we have only experienced Him as our Healer to a limited degree. The great extent to which we have seen Him work as the Deliverer gives us hope that we shall soon see Him move in a limitless way as the Healer. I have consulted the books: “Love not the World” by Watchman Nee and “War on the Saints” by Jessie Penn-Lewis as I wrote these messages. In addition, my experience of walking with Christ for 18 years has undoubtedly provided the ground work for this book. As companion volumes to this book, we have also written: “Deliverance from Demons” and “The Overthrow of Principalities.” It will be necessary to read these two books to have a complete picture of spiritual warfare as we see it.
Since people must be led, they will of necessity be led somewhere. If the leader is going nowhere, the people will follow him - to nowhere. If he is going where God wants him to go, people will follow him and by so doing, they will get to the place where God wants them to be.
It is therefore important that the leader sees very clearly where God wants him and the people to go. After he has seen, he must be desperate to get there, not alone but with the people. He must finally move from being desperate to desperate action.
The act of seeing is vision.
The weight to see that which is seen become reality is burden.
The right vision will lead to a burden which must be discharged by action.
In “Vision, Burden and Action,” we set forth what we believe is a message for the Body of Christ now. We believe that this message is for every believer, and not just for some members of the Body. It is for all current leaders and for all would-be leaders. It is for those
who lead millions of people, and also for you who is perhaps still leading only one person - yourself.
These messages were first preached in the church over two week-ends in 1984. Believers gathered from about ten localities and the Lord spoke and taught them and taught me.
We send them out with prayer that the Lord would use them to bless you very abundantly.
We live in a generation that does not provide for quiet. Everything is moving fast. There is so much activity going on. The leaders of the day, be they in worldly circles or in the Church, are activists. Those who withdraw to wait on God are few.
We believe that when believers in an increasing number, begin to withdraw and spend time alone in God's presence, something will happen to them. They will know God and then they will seek Him more and more. They will serve Him from His presence and things will be different. They will make spiritual progress.
We send out this small book with prayer that the Lord will use it to help some make spiritual progress by withdrawing to seek God, know Him and obey Him.
If you have been blessed through reading this book, please help put a copy in the hands of another believer and pray that he, too, will be blessed.
I was not quite prepared for some of the things that I have seen in these last weeks about the Body of Christ and the need to be at peace with each believer. However, God has led me. My eyes have been opened, and I have begun to carry out the needed restitution. This morning I went out to seek a brother with whom I have had a problem for a long time now. I asked for his forgiveness and he forgave me and we prayed together. He asked God to forgive him for his own wrong. I went to a second brother, but he was not at home. There is a third brother with whom I will seek to be reconciled this week. I can no longer recrucify the Lord by not removing every barrier that I can remove, which stands between me and anyone who confesses that Jesus is Lord. I believe that this is only the beginning, and that the Holy Spirit will lead me on and on, until I am able to truly say: “I know no one on earth who confesses that Jesus is Lord with whom I am not in fellowship as far as it depends on me.” That is one aspect of spiritual rest. There are other aspects covered in this book.
My prayer for you, as you read this book, is that you be open to the Holy Spirit and that you obey Him wherever He may lead you and at any cost.
I commit you to the Lord who said; “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14:27). May you know His peace as you read and also know His peace as you obey. This, too, is spiritual rest.
There is much falsehood in the world today. Even in the Church, truth is lacking. This is a most serious lack, for it hinders God enormously. God cannot do anything useful through a person who claims to be regenerated and yet continues to practice falsehood in one area of his life or the other. No one can truly practise the truth in one area of his life while deliberately practising falsehood in another. Falsehood must be abandoned completely and radically, and the truth must be embraced with the total man - spirit, soul and body. Truth thus embraced will flow from the spirit to the soul and then to the body, and from the body it will flow out.
What most believers need today is to cry out to God as the Psalmist did, saying, “Create in me clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10). That cry comes from hearts that have seen falsehood for what it is and are desperate to get right with God and remain right with Him. Such will cry out and continue to cry out until God has done that which only He can do to set them free. While they cry out and continue to cry out to Him, they will co-operate with Him by recognizing all the falsehood in their lives, confessing every lie, forsaking every appearance of falsehood, receiving a cleansed heart from the Lord, and carrying out the needed restitution. In this way they will enrol in the School of Truth and, as they abide in the Lord and continue in that School, more and more will be shown to them, leading to deeper repentance, and more and more will be done in them, bringing them into greater conformity to Him who is the Truth, even our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
There are things that God must do, and man must not attempt to do them. There are other things that He has decided in His sovereignty to let man do. He will not do them for man. If man decides not to do them, they will remain undone. We present in these messages the responsibility of the believer to do that which he must do. We are fully persuaded that in the light of the cross, the resurrection and the out-poured Holy Spirit, the willing believer can live a sin-free life, be wholly consecrated to the Lord, and serve the Lord to the satisfaction of the Father.
Because the messages were copied out from tapes with very little modification, they maintain the preaching tone and characteristics.
We send this book out with the prayer that the Lord of the harvest should use it to produce people who are sanctified and consecrated for spiritual ministry.
