Scales, Chords, Arpeggios & Cadences - Complete Book is part of a three-book series. These excellent all-inclusive books teach scales, chords, arpeggios, and cadences at three different levels. The Scales, Chords, Arpeggios & Cadences - FIRST Book accommodates the learning pace of younger students such as those in Alfred's Basic Piano Course, Level 2. Scales, Chords, Arpeggios & Cadences - BASIC Book is slightly more in-depth, presenting scales, chords, arpeggios, and cadence studies in all the major and minor keys. Scales, Chords, Arpeggios & Cadences - COMPLETE book features everything in the BASIC book, plus extra features like a detailed explanation that leads to complete understanding of the fundamentals of major and minor scales, chords, arpeggios, and cadences; a clear explanation of scale degrees; and a guide to fingering the scales and arpeggios.
"Plenty of detail that goes into posture, hand position, thumb position, etc. The notation and strumming is really good here because it builds up in stages. In a lesson, you can introduce it in this way piece by piece and not overwhelm the student." -- Michael Hanna, Grade 8 RS.Guitar - Larne Guitar School (N.Ireland)
Learn to Play Guitar is comprehensive and clear with over 180 photographic examples, illustrations and purpose made diagrams. This guitar book includes 42 downloadable mp3 tracks of full band demo and backing track with the guitar removed for you to play over. Learn to Play Guitar bridges the gaps explaining guitar techniques that can be taken for granted by more experienced guitar players.
Melodies: To get you straight into playing music, numbers have been added underneath guitar tablature to assist with the rhythm. Later on, the rhythmical aspect of conventional music notation is covered so you can use it in conjunction with tablature.
Rhythm Guitar: Changing between chords and strumming are presented as separate subjects initially, so that you can develop coordination in each hand independently. They are then brought together starting basic and getting more advanced until there is a rhythm guitar musical piece to play.
Music theory: The major scale, minor scale, major and minor pentatonic scales and basic major and minor chord construction are explained in terms of the fret-board and reinforced by musical pieces in various styles to make the learning process practical and enjoyable.
What else?: Fret-board layout, power chords, barre chords, how to string a guitar, how to practise guitar, palm muting and basic lead guitar techniques.
Please Note: The eBook includes musical pieces so is not suitable for smaller screens.
"This top value eBook and MP3 package covers a wide range topics essential for all guitarists. Over 100 pages with plenty of information and solid advice that a player can dip into as needed. Evans does not gloss over the often neglected area of reading notation for rhythm. There are many examples to practice (melodies and rhythm patterns) with the backing tracks. I was especially interested in the final section of exercises to keep your body guitar-ready. A very useful tool to help you progress with your guitar playing." -- Hedley Timbs BA(Mus), Grad.Dip. Teaching (New Zealand)
"Awesome. Well laid out, easy to look at and there is the supplemental material to top it off. The theory may get tedious for some, it's hard to not teach theory but most people seem to have an aversion to it, the idea of discipline I think." -- Gernot Schlegel, Professional Guitarist & Teacher (Canada)
"There’s two ways of learning the guitar – the first is two learn enough of the basics to fly towards playing your favourite songs competently, and the second is to intensively gain an understanding of the instrument by forming a solid foundation through taking your time with it in the early stages. The book titled “Learn to play Guitar” by Gareth Evans is of the latter approach. Through reading and learning from this book, players can discover a deep, extensive and in-depth approach to the technique, theory and everything else related to being a good beginner guitarist. Newcomers can learn positive and productive exercises to train their body to better play the guitar (not just their fingers) and across the 120 or so pages within, it’s clear that the writer has put a lot of time into figuring out the right approach for starters to take when adjusting to the standard 6-string. Would recommend this for anyone who is looking to get a really solid grip on how to play the guitar, and also to tutors who are looking at ways to improve their own tutoring abilities." -- Logan Ellis, Mgr. Spiderhands Productions Ltd (New Zealand)
"Learn to play Guitar is an ideal companion to support the beginner on their new found musical journey. Highly recommended." -- Liam Cain, BMus (hons) Professional Guitarist (UK)
“Gareth Evan's guitar chord book is one of the most thorough and in-depth books I have ever seen. If you're armed with one of these books, you will have everything you will ever require to know all about chords.” -- Tony Cox, Award winning Acoustic guitarist (South Africa)
Chords for Guitar is about moveable chord shapes based on the CAGED guitar system. Rather than presenting the same shapes for the same chord types as different chords when moved up or down the fret-board, giving 1000’s of chords, Chords for Guitar makes this into a simple unified process by showing only the moveable shapes and how to move them up down the fret-board, allowing for more chord types.
Chord Reference: Chords for Guitar is a reference of over 200 unique shapes for just over 60 different chord types, from the commonly used chord types such as major, minor, sus2, sus4, add9 and 7th chords to further extended chords, altered chords and inversions, enabling you to find many more chords yourself and get a better understanding of the fret-board.
Questions and Answers: The root note location within all of the guitar chords is clearly marked out, enabling you to transpose its moveable shape up and down the fret-board. Each chord type has a question to make sure you’re on track to being able to locate guitar chords yourself; shift the root note to its note name location (e.g. C, F#, G etc.) apply the chord shape, then check the answer at the back.
Theory: Theory and chord construction are explained using piano keys for the simplicity of its linear layout of notes, then applied to the six-string guitar, from the basics of using odd numbered intervals (e.g. 1, 3, 5 etc.) to the compound intervals within extended chords and alterations.
"At the School of Guitar we always use the CAGED system but we have never seen it applied so well to all chords. There are many books and resources that use the CAGED system but they are normally limited to major chords or minor chords and a few more. This book uses it brilliantly applying it to every chord you can imagine. I love the way each transposable version of the chord is linked to an open chord. Not only is it the best CAGED book of chords, we would go further and say it is simply the best book of chords we have seen." -- Cormac O Caoimh, School of Guitar (Cork Ireland)
"A lot of the time I have found myself trapped between overbearing simplicity and overwhelming music theory related language. Gareth Evans' 'Chords for Guitar' proved to be the perfect mid-ground. Furthermore, it touched on something I have personally had issues with when writing or learning new music. I had wanted to start playing less with a capo, and more with an ability to transpose chords and find the right key just by being more familiar with the fret board in it's entirety. This book teaches you exactly this. Highly recommended." -- Rebecca Cullen, Performing Musician & Composer (Manchester UK)
"For those students of guitar who are looking for an explanation of this famed system of learning the guitar fretboard, in a relatively fast, painfree and efficient manner, this is a wonderful book. You will find many subtle chords that you hadn't expected were easily movable." -- Marion Arts, Guitar Teacher, Performer & Composer (New Zealand)

The system that is presented in the book is accessible for a large group of drummers from amateur to pro. A lot of drum teachers in Holland use this book for their students, because playing fills is a very nice way to develop technique and rudimental capabilities. Also the individual creativity will be teased by using this system! Besides the more than 100 examples of tough linear* drum fills that come with the book, there is the unique Fill Generator, which gives you many possibilities to create your own drum fills!
In addition to the E book, the Skills & Fills Drum app has been developed in which 60 brand new tough drum fills (others than in the book) are demonstrated on video.. With the "Tools" button on your screen you will get access to the Fill Generator.. It's highly recommended to use the Drum APP besides the book, for an even more inspiring drum experience, but both the Book and Drum App are very useful on its own as well..
* Linear drum fills incorporate stickings that usually don't overlap each other. This is why linear drum fills and grooves always sound very open and clear!

3-Shape Fretboard is for intermediate to advanced guitarists interested in learning how to work out guitar scales and arpeggios for themselves. Being able to create guitar scales and arpeggios yourself can give a better understanding, while knowing the logic behind them can make them more meaningful and therefore easier to learn.
The Major Scale: It all starts with the major scale, the basis of music. All other scales and arpeggios can be defined in comparison to this scale. The book reflects this in practical terms by categorising the major scale into three different fundamental shapes, which once understood, can be used as templates to figure out other guitar scales and arpeggios.
The CAGED System: This system can help to understand the larger CAGED guitar scale shapes in terms of their single octave components. For example, the five CAGED shapes for the major (or minor) pentatonic scales that each contain twelve notes, can be learned as only two shapes of five notes, which are joined end to end to give us the five full CAGED shapes.
>> Various 3-Note per string scales can be understood as the same combination of single octave component types.
>> See how basic major and minor chords are formed from within scales and look at triad and 7th chord based harmony.
>> Each scale and arpeggio type has a question, with the answer at the back of the book in guitar tablature.
>> 3-Shape Fretboard contains 600 fretboard diagrams.
>> Intervals are grouped together in the context of the scales they are intended for, which can provide a foundation for learning intervals individually on the fretboard.
Please Note: The eBook includes diagrams not suitable for smaller screens.
"A logical and thorough approach to understanding scales, intervals and arpeggios on the guitar. All related to the universal CAGED idea of fretboard layout. Plenty to study and apply to your playing." -- Hedley Timbs, BA(Mus), Grad.Dip. Teaching (New Zealand)"I think the 3 pattern approach is very interesting and well documented. There is lots of good material and I like the approach. Very well organised, complete and clear with plenty of diagrams." -- Fabien Aubry, Composer, Arranger & Producer (Switzerland)
Technique, through essential, must be subordinate to musical understanding. Complete knowledge of scales, apprehended not mechanically but musically; understanding of the uses of rests and silence, which Mozart considered the greatest effect in music; a feeling for rhythm and training of the ear; these are the basic elements of a thorough grounding in musicianship and are accordingly emphasized in the opening chapters.
The heart of the book is devoted to the attainment of a beautiful tone. Anyone who has heard Lhevinne play or has listened to one of his recordings will know how great were his achievements in that area. The secret lay, at least in part, in the technique he called "the arm floating in air," and in the use of the wrists as natural shock absorbers. The achievement of varieties of tone, of the singing, ringing tone, of brilliancy, of delicacy, and of power are all explained in terms of a careful analysis of the ways in which the fingers, hand, wrist, arm, and indeed the whole body function in striking the keys. There are further remarks about how to get a clear staccato and an unblurred legato, about the dangers of undue emphasis on memorization and the need for variety in practicing, and special comments on the use of the pedal, which should be employed with as much precision as the keys.
Throughout, specific musical examples are presented as illustrations. The author draws not only upon his own experiences and methods, but upon the examples of Anton Rubenstein and of his teacher, Safonoff, for this remarkably lucid and concise formulation of basic principles.
This book continues the work Martial Singher has done, in performances, in concerts, and in master classes and lessons, by drawing attention “not only to precise features of text, notes, and markings but also to psychological motivations and emotional impulses, to laughter and tears, to technical skills, to strokes of genius, and even here and there to variations from the original works that have proved to be fortunate.”
For each aria, the author gives the dramatic and musical context, advice about interpretation, and the lyric—with the original language (if it is not English) and an idiomatic American English translation, in parallel columns. The major operatic traditions—French, German, Italian, Russian, and American—are represented, as are the major voice types—soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, baritone, bass-baritone, and bass.
The dramatic context is not a mere summary of the plot but is a penetrating and often witty personality sketch of an operatic character in the midst of a situation. The musical context is presented with the dramatic situation in a cleverly integrated way. Suggestions about interpretation, often illustrated with musical notation and phonetic symbols, are interspersed among the author's explication of the music and the action. An overview of Martial Singher’s approach—based on fifty years of experience on stage in a hundred roles and in class at four leading conservatories—is presented in his Introduction. As the reader approaches each opera discussed in this book, he or she experiences the feeling of participation in a rehearsal on stage under an urbane though demanding coach and director.
The Interpretive Guide will be of value to professional singers as a source of reference or renewed inspiration and a memory refresher, to coaches for checking and broadening personal impressions, to young singers and students for learning, to teachers who have enjoyed less than a half century of experience, and to opera broadcast listeners and telecast viewers who want to understand what goes into the sounds and sights that delight them.
