This monograph lays the foundations of a theory that generalizes the studies of sheaves and fibre bundles. The basic new notion introduced here is called a "field of structures". In its simplest form, a field (of topological spaces) is a continuous mapping [Greek lowercase]Pi: E [function arrow] B, where E and B are spaces, such that E is the union of the images of local sections (defined in the usual way). More sophistication is introduced by imposing algebraic and topological structure on the stalks of the field, subject to suitable continuity conditions. The resulting object is more general than a fibre bundle, by virtue of the variability of its stalks, and richer in structure than a sheaf, because its stalks are not necessarily discrete. A large part of the book is concerned with applying this new concept to the representation of topological algebras and rings. In particular, the authors introduce some promising new techniques to the theory of C*algebras.
