 كان الشغل الشاغل للقديس أثناسيوس وبل عمل حياته كله الذى من أجله كرس كل وقته وكل قواه وكل جهوده هو "الشهادة لالوهية المسيح" التى أعتبرها بحق حجر الزاوية فى بناء الإيمان المسيحى كله، والتى بدونها لم يكن يتصور حدوث أى فداء أو خلاص للانسان. ومن أجل هذا الحق "ألوهية المسيح"، صرف أثناسيوس كل وقته وبذلك طاقاته، ولأجل هذا الحق أحتمل العزل من كرسيه البطريركى وأحتمل النفى خمس مرات بلغت مدتها معًا عشرون عامُا، بل ولاجل هذا الحق كان مستعدًا فى أى لحظة أن يسفك دمه بكل سرور.
