सनातन वैदिक धर्माच्या ज्ञानकांडाला उपनिषद असे म्हणतात. हजारो वर्षांपूर्वी भारतामधे जीव-जगत, आत्मा-परमात्मा, ब्रह्म व माया तसेच त्यासंबंधीच्या इतर विषयांवर गंभीर चिंतन करून त्याद्वारे जी मीमांसा करण्यात आली व जी अनुभव सिद्ध झाली, तीच उपनिषदांमध्ये संकलित करण्यात आली आहे. यालाच ‘वेदान्त’ असेही म्हणतात. श्रीमद् आद्यशंकराचार्यांनी उपनिषदे, ब्रह्मसूत्र व गीता या प्रस्थानत्रयीवर भाष्य लिहिले आहे, त्याचबरोबर उपनिषदे वा वेदान्त अभ्यासण्यापूर्वी काही पूर्वतयारी करण्याच्या दृष्टीने त्यांनी काही ‘प्रकरणग्रन्थ’ लिहिले. त्यांपैकीच ‘विवेकचूडामणि’ हा एक महत्त्वाचा ग्रन्थ आहे. वेदान्ताचा अभ्यास करणार्या सर्वच साधकांसाठी हा अत्यंत उपयोगी आहे. यामधे गुरू आणि शिष्य यांच्या संवादाद्वारे वेदान्तातील सत्ये उलगडून दाखविण्याचा प्रयत्न करण्यात आलेला आहे. मूळ संस्कृत श्लोक योग्यप्रकारे समजण्यासाठी या पुस्तकात त्यांचा अन्वय आणि अत्यंत सोप्या-सरळ भाषेत अनुवाद देण्यात आला आहे.
