１９９９年にはアメリカの雑誌『ライフ』における企画「この１０００年で最も重要な功績を残した世界の人物１００人」において日本人で唯一ランキング入りした（86位）。北斎がいかに世界的に評価されているかがわかっていただけるだろう。
１８３１年刊行の『冨嶽三十六景』は日本人なら誰もが知っている名作中の名作だ。その『冨嶽三十六景』と並んで葛飾北斎の代表作と言われているのがこの『北斎漫画』で、19世紀中ごろには日本のみならず欧州へと伝えられた。『北斎漫画』はジャポニズム（日本趣味）を引き起こす原動力となり、パリでは神として崇められるほどであった。モネ、ゴッホ、ゴーギャンなど欧州の画家たちは北斎の描写力と構図に感動し、自分たちの絵の中にも取り入れた。『北斎漫画』は“ホクサイ・スケッチ”と呼ばれ海外でも人気を博した。
全15編から成り、約４０００もの浮世絵が収録されている『北斎漫画』の中から今回は「人物・風俗」を題材にした作品を中心にまとめた。北斎の個性豊かな人物描写や今日では信じられないような風俗に是非注目し、鑑賞していただければと思う。
表題の「漫画」は「気の向くままに漫然と描いた画」であることに由来しており、北斎自身が名付けたと言われている。森羅万象を描いた葛飾北斎を体現した作品であり、人物、風俗、動植物、伝説の生物、風景、建築物、歴史などあらゆるものを題材にしている。人物を描く際には人のふざけた顔を描くなど、非常に独創的で北斎らしい作品の数々だ。現代の「漫画」という言葉はこの作品の表題が元となっているのではないかとされている。
【葛飾北斎 プロフィール】
葛飾北斎（１７６０?１８４９）は、江戸後期に活躍した浮世絵師。風景画、奇想画、春画など幅広い浮世絵を手掛けた。また読本や挿絵芸術、さらには『北斎漫画』などの絵本を数多く発表。何よりも絵を描くことに情熱を燃やし、自ら「画狂人」と名乗るほどである。
代表作は、『北斎漫画』、『冨嶽三十六景』、『富嶽百景』など。生涯で３万以上の作品を手掛け、森羅万象を絵の題材とした。

Katsushika Hokusai（1760-1849）was very important Ukiyo-e artist and is recognized as the most famous Japanese artist in the world, now. “Hokusai Manga” is his masterpiece, along with “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji”. In “Hokusai Manga”, he depicts ordinary people’s lives, animals, plants, landscapes and supernatural, even demon and monsters, as if it were visual encyclopedia, which amount to 15 volumes.
