マビノギオンは英国南西部のウェールズに古くから伝わるケルト民族系の英雄譚だ。吟遊詩人によって伝承されてきた物語はさまざまなウェールズ語古文献に記されていたが、ゲスト夫人によって英訳編纂されて、日の目をみた。その中の最も真正な部分をなすのが「四つの枝のマビノギ」であり、夫人によって「マビノギオン」と名づけられた。この四編はともにキリスト教侵入以前のウェールズ神話に元があり、魔法と夢とが全編をつらぬき、素朴だが力強い想像力に裏打ちされた物語になっている。巻末には荒俣宏氏による簡潔な「解説」を付してある。
